Hello,

I have an Arcade game called GORF. When I turn it on, the lights and sounds (including the voice modulator) work fine. The picture, however, is extremely slanted to the point it is just a thin line on the screen. It is as if the horizontal hold has been messed up.

Does anyone know how this can be fixed? New monitor? Replace some other part?

If I replace the monitor, is it just a matter of unplugging a few wires from the old and plugging in the new or do I need a professional repairman?

Thanks,
John

I can take a picture and post it later. It is vertical.

The screen was originally perfect. Then started become squished from the left and right sides. I had an arcade repairman come by to try to fix it. He took the monitor back to his shop but when he reinstalled it the picture is now completely squished. He suggests replacing the monitor but I'm not so sure.

OK, what did the repair guy do?

If it is a vertical line that is referred to as vertical collapse and repairs are fairly well documented for most monitors. When you take the pictures we will need pics of the circuit board (called the chassis) on the back. You don't need to remove it for the pictures but it will need to be removed for repairs.

Also, if you prefer there are many guys on this message board that you can send your chassis to for repairs. Some may even live close to you.

Edited because I forgot that Gorf is a vertical mount monitor.

Oryk,

Attached are the pictures. I'll post another 5 of the boards. Unfortunately I have no idea where/what the chasis board is. As you can see, the GORF screen actually displayed normally for about 5 seconds. Then it looks like a rapid moving meteor shower---the screen fills with yellow lines running up and down. I was wrong about the single vertical line.

I'd like to be able to explain to a local technician what my problem is so he can fix it the first visit. I looked for more information about vertical collapse but I have no understanding of these things and will be getting a professional to fix this.

Any advice or a central NJ repairman would be welcome. More pics in next post.

BTW...great Avatar Oryk!

More Pics

If any of these are the chasis board or if you see it on the bigger pics let me know and I will take a closer shot of it.

You have a Wells Gardner K4600 monitor.
The problem looks like it might be able to adjust out. Seems to be a sync/horizontal hold issue.
How comfortable are you with a small screwdriver around that thing ?
Could also be bad solder joints where the two daughter cards plug in.

What did the other tech actually do, if anything ?
This should have been an easy one for any kind of "tech".
And they should have readjusted everything upon putting it back in your machine.

I don't think the previous tech did anything except take out the monitor, wipe off some dust and put it back in.

That would be great if all I have to do is turn a screw.

Do any of my pictures capture where this screw is? Perhaps you know where there are some instructions or pictures of it from someone else's machine?

I believe someone has mentioned that these machines are dangerous from an electrical perspective even when they are unplugged. Sounds like the machine will need to be on as the adjustment is made. So long as I don't have to actually remove any boards, I should be ok with a plastic screwdriver, right?

Oryk, what do you think now that you have seen the pictures?

John

Read through the page posted above and try adjusting just the Horizontal Hold first.
If need be then center the Horizontal Hold as mentioned and adjust L351.
L351 is the one that can be kinda tricky to see and reach. There will be a small hole that you will need to reach the screwdriver through.

GORF still slanted

Hello,

The is the OP. No I did not fix my GORF machine yet. I waited to try until I finished my basement which is now done.

I evidently turned the wrong knob because now the screen is pretty much entirely black.

1) Should I try again but please give me as much info as possible. I can supply better pictures of what knobs I see.

2) Would replacing the monitor fix this issue? Is 8lines reliable or can someone suggest another vendor of a replacement WG k4600 sideways mounted monitor? Sounds like 8lines only sells refurbished.

3) I know someone who is selling his GORFbut recently did a IC replacement on his. Is that a reliable repair typically or just a patch so he can sell it? I don't mind buy a "new" machine so long as it's as clean as he says it is.

Please help.

Start over and tell us exactly what's on the screen, and what you did. The "problem" you had before was little more than a misadjusted horizontal frequency control. If you turned something that made the picture black - turn it back.

Of course. In the same way that replacing your car with a new one would solve the issue of a flat tire.

Parts fail occasionally and need to be replaced. It's not a patch - it's a permanent fix. RAM chip and SC-01 failures are common in Gorfs. I've fixed several Gorf boardsets.

The screen just looks a little wavy...but the picture is faint and ultimately fades away and I see nothing on the screen. And then when I lose a life, the blast brings the screen up but quickly starts fading again.

Here are pictures of the knobs I see. Will any of these help?

Two of the pictures of knobs we have already discussed. What do the two white knobs and the far black knob pictures control?

And what should I do next?

I really appreciate your help.

I have made an appointment for a TV repairman to come to the house Saturday afternoon to take a look at it ($60 applicable to the repair if I choose to do the repair).

OP again.....

I was able to actually play the first three screens even though the picture was faint and there was no color blue at all. However, after Galaxians, the game reset as if I had lost all my lives. It did this 3 times. It just kept resetting.

Does this indicate a bigger problem than just the monitor????

I am leaning torwards a bad RGB interface board. The screen is coming up fine when its first booted then the issues start so it seems heat related. It looks like the monitor has been recently capped looking at the picture.
You adjusted the brightness pot on the left daughterboard of the monitor, adjust that back up so the screen reappears. Then you can try adjusting the pot on the other card. This one is a small square metal can and the adjustment requires a small screwdriver to get at it.
