To finish this cabinet, I actually removed the top part from the bottom by a system of blocks, lifting each side an inch at a time until I had it lifted about 5 inches higher than it naturally sits. I was originally gonna just seal the grey primer I used on the lower half, but when subjected to natural light, I could see a faint tiger striping effect that was driving me nuts. So I decided to make a bold decision and thinned down some metallic Aluminum-colored Rustoleum oil based paint. I then added a touch of gloss smoke grey as a filler. I then mixed it smooth and rolled it on with a nice foam roller. Wow, I am 1000 times happier with the base now. It has a rich metallic grey color rather than the flat sickly grey of the original laminate. The color and shade actually changes as you move around the cab and as it moves in and out of light and shadow. The finish is smooth and the sheen is gorgeous. Pictures don't fully do it justice, but trust me, this bitch shimmers:
I wanted to also mention that I placed 2 orders of black 3/4 textured T-molding from tmolding.com about 8 months apart and was pretty pissed when I tried to use the stuff from the most recent order. The t-molding I ordered 8 months ago is the exact thickness of my cabinet edge. Since I had enough left over from my last project to finish one side of this cabinet, I used it. Then I proceeded to install the new stuff on the other side. The new stuff I ordered overhangs each edge by 1/32 "? Really frustrating, as I bought 50 feet of the stuff, and I assume there will be the same thickness discrepancy with all the Midway cabs I was gonna use it on. What a bunch of bullshit. The other issue I had was installing the t-molding at the bottom edge of the upper cabinet. I used a cloth to protect the lower gray cabinet, but still my rubber mallet left 3-4 nice light black skid marks on the grey area that so far glass cleaner and elbow grease isn't removing. Well, I've got a few money shots:
