Gorf Restoration

To finish this cabinet, I actually removed the top part from the bottom by a system of blocks, lifting each side an inch at a time until I had it lifted about 5 inches higher than it naturally sits. I was originally gonna just seal the grey primer I used on the lower half, but when subjected to natural light, I could see a faint tiger striping effect that was driving me nuts. So I decided to make a bold decision and thinned down some metallic Aluminum-colored Rustoleum oil based paint. I then added a touch of gloss smoke grey as a filler. I then mixed it smooth and rolled it on with a nice foam roller. Wow, I am 1000 times happier with the base now. It has a rich metallic grey color rather than the flat sickly grey of the original laminate. The color and shade actually changes as you move around the cab and as it moves in and out of light and shadow. The finish is smooth and the sheen is gorgeous. Pictures don't fully do it justice, but trust me, this bitch shimmers:

I wanted to also mention that I placed 2 orders of black 3/4 textured T-molding from tmolding.com about 8 months apart and was pretty pissed when I tried to use the stuff from the most recent order. The t-molding I ordered 8 months ago is the exact thickness of my cabinet edge. Since I had enough left over from my last project to finish one side of this cabinet, I used it. Then I proceeded to install the new stuff on the other side. The new stuff I ordered overhangs each edge by 1/32 "? Really frustrating, as I bought 50 feet of the stuff, and I assume there will be the same thickness discrepancy with all the Midway cabs I was gonna use it on. What a bunch of bullshit. The other issue I had was installing the t-molding at the bottom edge of the upper cabinet. I used a cloth to protect the lower gray cabinet, but still my rubber mallet left 3-4 nice light black skid marks on the grey area that so far glass cleaner and elbow grease isn't removing. Well, I've got a few money shots:

Ideally, I will be taking very nice pics tonight with the good camera, but I couldn't help posting some of the pics I took this morning. This machine turned out pretty damned nice:

Which logo plate are you going with for the coin door?

I still have the original. I tried to restore it by masking, repainting, then clearcoating, but it's still not perfect. It has a few small dents and there are some scratches in the metal. It looks 100 times better than when I started, but I was just experimenting to see if I could save it. Out of principal, I may still use it. I have some split rivets Rip sent me to attach it with. In fact, I am gonna use it. It looks pretty sweet, but certainly not new.

As always, nice restore Phet. The real question is, whats your high score today?

I really like the gray. Looks fantastic.

Thanks Jim. I LOVE this metallic grey. That was one of 2 things that bothered me about this cab. The other was the shape and size of the side art. I couldn't really change the side art, so I decided to change the one thing I could still get away with. The shimmery grey is actually is reflective to a point as well. I mean you can't check your hair or face when looking into it, but it does reflect color and shapes.

That looks GREAT. Right outta the factory. One question, did you paint the lower monitor bezel bracket or just clean it up?

Thank you. You mean the louvered piece of brushed aluminum above the CP? No paint, just 3 polishings with Tarnx metal polish. Same treatment I gave to the marquee brackets. They match the new repro CP perfectly now.

The ones without flash are quite dramatic and not for the faint of heart. Viewer discretion is advised.

Amazing, very well done. I am going to restore mine soon, does anyone sell the inner side art? Also how did you do the white specs on the sides over the blue? Thx and love the photos

You should make videos to show off your amazing work. Thx for the tips as well
