Gorf Restoration

Anyone ever try a clear coat over primer?

Why would one ever need to clearcoat over primer, unless it was for a vintage hot rod, flames on primer, or something?

I just want to protect and seal the automotive primer I used on the lower half of the game. The color was a perfect match, so I wanted to stick with just the 3 coats of primer I used, but add a top coat of clear. I was asking if anyone had done it.

I doubt anyone cares, but for archival purposes, I thought I'd update my progress with some pics. I got one side of side art on, marquee brackets polished and installed with new shiny hex screws, and 2 new 60 watt CFL's installed. Then I got the marquee polished and put in place. Pics:

I also started to replace and analyze the inner plastic/tinted plexi bezel. Is the plexi supposed to be taped in place? As far as the plastic black bezel that it may or may not be taped to, is there supposed to be a notch cut out for the rank progress bulb rack? Seems kind of archaic, but that's what was on the machine when I got it.

If if makes you feel any better...I care!

I don't remember how it was held in place, but I'm sure it wasn't with tape. And yes, the bezel had a cutout area around the rank lights.

Thanks guys. The holidays (and now my sick kids) have successfully yanked the necessary free time that I needed to finish this restoration further and further from my grasp. ANY progress I make from now on, no matter how little, is to be celebrated and documented.

As to the current ghost town that is the restoration forum, I think we really need to start a new policy on restorations. Upon completion of a restored game, EVERY restoration thread should be allowed to be posted in the General Forum and allowed to remain there for at least 2 weeks until being moved to the restoration forum. At least that way there will be more views, more attention and more inspiration for others to start their own restos. As it is, since very few actually venture into this sub-forum, some really nice restorations are getting missed or completely ignored, while nonsensical threads about nothing remotely related to arcade games are repeatedly bumped by the same 2-3 people and somehow ride the top of the active threads for weeks. Kinda gets a bit discouraging for those that put in a lot of hard work on these arcade machines and wanna showcase that work for (supposedly) like-minded and collectively appreciative individuals. I've noticed several kick-ass and deserving restoration threads over the last year with barely any comments or views. Sad. Oh well, the 3 of us that still care can just keep patting each others backs, stroking each others egos and drooling. Hey, that sounds a lot like what transpired at Fritz's last "Guys Night Out". **shudders**

Lookin real good. Nice job on the splatter. I like the idea of masking off the side art area first. When you did your cabinent work did you seperate the blue top part from the gray base or did you leave it as one piece?

I know what you mean. With a 10 week old daughter, finding time to work on cabs is difficult

I agree. Maybe we should start an end of year "best of" in the general section and link to the restores? Post a before and after photo and link to the restoration thread.

I did both. I removed the screws, lifted the top part up and put it on blocks while I painted the bottom, then lowered the top and masked off the bottom. I didn't want to remove all of the speakers, lights, upper wiring, etc, so I just cleaned it, scrubbed it and left it inside the cab. Believe me, as long as it can take me to finish these restorations nowadays, I can't just leave parts laying around for months. They get lost, misplaced or broken and then I forget how they all go back together, even with pictures. I also masked off the inner art and used newspaper drop cloths to be able to paint the insides of the upper cab black without getting a lot of overspray.

:001_ssad: Are you not getting enough attention, I care about your restorations.

It's not you dear Paul-skin, it's me. No, actually, it's the recent DKJR resto and Spy's Robotron resto thread that made me think about this. Back in the old days, when these threads were put in the general section, you'd get at least a good week of mileage out of a good resto thread. Now you're lucky to not be on page 4 in a day or 2.

I've felt that way about my restoration threads. I don't expect a pat on the back, but it seems like there'd be more discussion generated from this. Instead, you get 100 posts on a thread about the ethics of parting out a moldy, swollen cabinet. Bah!

Yeah, your Stargate Restoration was genius too, and only a few folks seemed to care. You'd think the serious 'preservationists' would be all over these threads, offering congratulations and many thanks on not only another cab saved, but on another cab restored to 'factory' condition again. Kinda makes a fella not really buy into the "don't part these games for any reason" mentality, as the folks who champion that cause never really say anything when someone does the opposite. If you really cared about preserving these things, you'd be in the restoration section every day, offering encouragement and exhaling a few ooohs and aaaahs. Makes it more fun for the guys that spend months restoring and photographing these things. Oh well, I guess controversy is more fun for most of these 'serious' collectors.

Phet, I heard the blue paint you used was stripped off a perfect working Gorf, melted back into a liquid, and sprayed onto your cab.

There...that should start a good controversy and get people in here. :)

Yes, and it was also infused with stem cells to add a nice satin sheen.

Well I am nearly finished. My wife took the good camera, so I took few teaser shots of the coin door being assembled and installed with my old dust filled camera. I do have a few issues to deal, namely the wiring routing and my stick lights. Otherwise, she is nearly complete. I'll get some nice money shots taken tonight. Beautiful game.
