Gorf Optical Joystick repair using Bally Rapid Fire parts
Last week, Dewman picked up a Gorf in unbelievably minty condition with one mechanical issue, one of the optics was fubar. We desoldered and moved the optic to another location just to verify and the problem migrated to the other location.
So I took the part # down as the company I work for has many different sets of optics in hopes that I could find a match. Came close, but no luck. I also looked at all of the trackball optics I had but to no avail. Then I remembered my Bally Rapid Fire. You'd think I'd have put 2 and 2 together (Midway Gorf.... Bally Rapid Fire....) but no.. not until I actually picked up my bag of spare parts for my Rapid Fire did I make the connection. The bag included 9 spare target switches, which as luck would have it, use an optic
Removed the optic and upon closer inspection, it looked like the same pinout without the wings (screwholes).
The only issue was that the leads were a bit further apart than on the Gorf optic board. So I desoldered the optic from the rapid fire board and bent the pins inward in order to solder it to the Gorf board.
And it works perfectly. So for those who may be looking for replacement optics for the Gorf Optical Joystick. There are 3 different Bally Rapid Fire part #'s for the optical switches. They are:
Optical Switch...................... AS-2518-95
Single Target Optical Switch.... AS-2518-100
Single Target Optical Switch.... AS-2518-101
I'm not sure if there is a difference between them.
or you could just rob them off an old rapid fire playfield (there are 23 optic switches on each playfield)
