I am pulling the remainder of my hair out on this.. I better get it fixed soon or I will look like Howie Mandell. Game boots up fine, hit the coin switch, get the press start screen.. press start, and the game resets.

Heres what I have done this far:
Checked all the roms in my burner. X11 tested bad. When I boot the game up with that rom pulled.. the game actually starts on mission 3. Burned a new 2732, popped that in, no change. Ok, so I popped the fluke on it, and pull the rom sigs, and Im getting the same for x11 and x13..hmm.. so I tracked that down to a bad buffer between the edge connector and the address decoder. No change. Ok..so hook the fluke back up take the rom sigs for x11 and x13, I swap them, retake the sigs and the x11 rom is different.. its different everytime I check it.. Could it be a bad eprom? I did verify the eprom on my burner.

uggh

You may check the type of EPROM. I wasn't aware that Gorf uses the 2732. All mine have been 2532's. It's a long shot, but thought I would toss that out there. Also, be sure the board isn't jumpered for ROM's.

Good luck!

I verified the Rom version, and am pretty sure its the 2732 version.. What is messing with me is that in 2 different sockets this Eprom gives me different sigs every time I run the test.. I can move one of the masked proms around and get the same sig in the different sockets.

Was it hard getting the fluke connected with the card in the cage? I remember looking at that and thinking it would be annoying to set up...

Any of the large boards can be moved to the front of the cage. If you need more room the metal panel can be removed so the whole board is exposed.

What I did with the fluke was for my testing I yanked the pattern board, put the game board in the back, then cpu board (with z80 pod) , skip a spot (where the pattern board is) then put the rom up front (so I can test..).

I tried several different eproms, all with the same result. I borrowed a rom board, and it worked, so I know my issue is on the rom bd. From some info Dick sent me, and from my eprom burner it looks like the board should have 2732s.. But the addressing logic on pins 18 and 21 look like 2532. I dont think its the sockets or the eproms per se.. My needhams burner doesnt seem to burn 2532s at all. I tried strapping the 2732 as a 2532, but that didnt work either. Oh well, time to take a break from it for a bit.

There are two different versions of the rom board. If I remember correctly the strapping jumpers are not the same for both. For testing purposes its easiest to throw some dips in the jumper sockets for the strapping. When you get it working you can go back and install permanent jumpers.

Yes.....the "domestic" and "foreign" ROM boards.

Do these ROMs look factory? I'm going with what others have mentioned.....I've never seen 2732s on a Gorf factory......I've seen 2532s, 9332As, and 9332Bs.

I have to agree. I've never seen 2732's in a Gorf, only 2532 EPROMs and the ROMs mentioned below. I would think that would be your problem. I once had a board strapped for ROMs by mistake and put EPROMs in it and I got the same kind of errors.

Also, I *think* the strapping IS the same for the two types of boards mentioned earlier. I would consult the manual to be totally sure.

Ok, maybe I got messed up with the prom/eprom deal.. It has the 9332A masked proms. The info I got was that these were compatible with 2732s (and that 9332Bs were 2532 compatible). If I replace the 9332A with a 2732, do I need to strap any pins?

Im going off memory here but I think if you look in the back couple pages of the manual it shows different strapping for the domestic vs foreign board. Maybe im confusing it with prom vs eprom but its worth a check. Last time I messed with a bunch of gorf boards I had alot of issues getting the foreign boards to work.

The manual (in regards to the strapping) is confusing as hell. I believe it's PROMs vs ROMs......and still some arn't documented......9332A's vs 9332B's are different. It's almost as bad as the strapping table Midway did with Space Invaders/8080A hardware. What a clusterfuck!

I believe this is why I was having seizures while dealing with the damn foreign boards. The domestic board seems to be easy to get working. I think I ended up copying the strapping from a known working board.....wish I had documented it.
