ok, so i've got this Gorf back together and working 99%. i put in a Bob Roberts PS rebuild kit and rebuilt the audio board with mostly new components so i finally have both channels of audio working. one thing i did do with this audio card was cut the JU1 jumper to make it stereo and not dual mono, though i don't think this should make any difference with my problem.

after watching several videos of Gorf on youtube i'm pretty sure i have all the sound effects (some from left, some from right) but i have no speech, and the effects do not drop to half volume as they should if there was speech.

i have a second working GAME board (the one with the SC-01 speech chip) that i threw in the rack and i still did not get any speech.

i suppose my immediate questions are:
-is there something obvious i should be looking for other than a bad SC-01?
-can speech be affected by voltage and separately from the effects (i.e., could i be missing or low on voltage somewhere?)
-which channel should speech be on, 1 or 2?

Gorf has driven me crazy on & off for 3 years now. It works today...I think.
My last problem was that I had no sound effects on the channel with speech. (ie the shot fired & hits made)
I had the same problem with my spare working set also when swapping out boards.
I ended up cleaning up the sockets on the bottom of the metal card cage(seems like I did this already though), & viola.
IMHO, there are just so many connections on this game, what with 6 game boards, a seperate audio amp board, the little RGB board, I think a lot of problems like you describe are due to bad connections.

that's kinda what i fear, though cleaning the card rack sockets is the kind of advice i'm looking for. initially i didn't have any sound so i rebuilt the audio PCB since it looked like it had bad resistors on it. still nothing once that (and the PS rebuild) was done, so doing more tracing of voltages i finally realized that the molex pin for the audio power was bad. now i've gone through and checked the rest and they all seem good.

if speech is on the same channel as shots fired and hits made than it's on channel 1.

i picked up my primary set from Dick, so i suppose i can go back up to his place to test it.

my second set works except for a bad pattern board. i was going to sell it but now that i've been reading up on issues i think i may just hang on to it.

the last thing other than speech that isn't working is the light on the joystick. that might be a fun one to track down too.

just in case anyone searches for info on this same issue, the problem turned out to be the SC-01 custom speech chip was bad. installed a working one and suddenly Gorf is taunting me once again!

i do try to follow up on these... too often i suspect the answer was found but never posted so the knowledge is not shared.

now, if i could just find a second SC-01 chip for my second boardset...

thanks! that's not horrible price-wise, since my second boardset is mostly working (also need a good pattern board, but i'll talk to Dick about that.)
