Gorf gameplay video and updated basement arcade video

Some time ago several people requested that I post up some Gorf gameplay. Well I finally got it up on youtube, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBq7QtCkTpc

Also there is an updated video of my gameroom in my signature, check it out. I moved 15 of my 24 games and I think I finally got them where I want 'em...

Both videos will be on Endrien's arcadetube site as soon as he approves them....

That is some mad Gorf skill right there, brother.

Gorf is so under appreciated. It's not expensive, and it should be in any collection that has the room for it. Gorf really captures the look and feel of games transitioning from simple SI type to colorful and complex.

The space warp board is the one that gets me all the time.

I like your technique of clearing away the shield on the last board. I'll have to try that.

Man, you really make it look easy.

Nice vid! How many times did you "cheat death" on the Space Warp stage? I hate that level. Man, those are some mad skills right there.

Space Warp is usually the hardest for everyone. You have to stay in the middle and avoid fireballs left and right, never going in one direction more than 2 fireballs. People tend to move in one direction and then you're trapped in the corner...also, I just happen to be a good shot. The spinning of the aliens doesn't throw me off, I can kind of "feel" where they are going to be.

If you clear the shield from the middle to the left side, those are the best areas to kill the flagship. The right side is worse for getting trapped. Also, don't fire like a madman, this increases your chances of getting hit by shrapnel, which always makes a b-line towards your ship. Take one or 2 shots per pass; also try to shoot one of the diving aliens if not both right away so you can concentrate on the flagship with no distractions.

Good tips! I'll have to try that. I usually clear out a good portion of the shield from right to left. Never thought about the right side trapping you more than the left. I've also never direct-hit the flagship like that. That was really sweet!

GORF is the game we had BITD at the front of the grocery store where I was a sack boy. Since it was just a few feet from where I stood, I played it at almost every break.

It's a game I HAD TO HAVE when I started collecting. WAY under appreciated.

I see where this thread is going, so here is some tips for everyone so you can improve your Gorf gameplay:

Astro Battles:
Stay in front of the invaders if possible. If you can't clear them like I do in my video that's ok. When passing underneath them to move to the other side don't fire. The shield disappears every time you fire. Hitting one or two when crossing over isn't worth it.

Laser Attack:
You must try to hit one of the ships that shoot a laser first. Whichever formation does NOT send a diving alien at you after the first laser blast, go for that ship first. Most of the time this is the right ship. If you miss, try not to keep your ship in between the 2 laser shooters. Move all the way to the right and stay LOW. Staying high up and to the right you will get trapped. Once one of the laser shooters is gone, you can stay on that side and clear the other aliens easily. The other laser shooter will stay on his side of the screen unless he is the LAST alien on the board, then he will move anywhere on the board except the extreme left, you're safe there.

Galaxians:
I start shooting a few on the right of the formation, then just before the first wave dives I move to the extreme left, drawing them all to the left. Then you can easily shoot a few as they dive and then move back to the right. I then lure them again to the left and then move back to the right. Of course this doesn't always work when more and more are diving; so remember you can stay low and avoid shots. The blue ones are the only aliens that shoot that "extra" shot when they are near your ship. All other aliens shoot right away when they dive, so if you are high up on the screen you can move downward and pick them off because they won't fire all the way down to the bottom. Biggest mistakes are staying high and in the corner. Stay in the center and draw them to the left and move down and to the corners in an emergency.

Space Warp:
Stay in the middle, but not necessarily all the way up unless you're a good shot. Stay back a little bit and concentrate on hitting the aliens when they come out of the hole. If you miss, concentrate on avoiding their fireballs, moving left and right and never in one direction more than 2 fireballs in a row or you will get trapped in the corner. If you miss the aliens, the ones that come out more in a circular pattern you can avoid being kamakazied by moving low on the screen. The ones that have the more elongated eliptical pattern stay in the middle and more towards the hole and they won't hit you.

Flag Ship:
Clear the shield from the middle to the left of the screen and forget about the right side(I was reckless on my video). Concentrate on picking off at least one of the diving aliens first; but remember they like to follow the path of the flagship's fireballs so be patient. Get both of them if you feel confident. Don't fire too much at the flagship, it only creates shrapnel that will for sure hit you. Just take one or maybe two shots per pass. Stay away from the right corner, and as the flagship goes from right to left take your shot. If you miss, concentrate on moving your ship thru a break in the fireballs back to the right. DON'T go all the way to the left corner. You can survive here better than the right, but it is a trap in the end. The flagship will only come down so far before it heads back up to the top again....

Edit: Also, take your shots at the flagship in the middle 1/3 of the screen; too far out towards either edge means shrapnel death if you miss....

Thanks for your comments and thanks to all the others who posted, too. Its all fun; and I just want everyone to be able to improve their scores and beat those Gorfian bastards! I hope I don't ever have to play the game for 5 hours ever again. I'll tell you guys the truth, it took me 4 or 5 tries to get a good video to post because I kept getting killed!! You gotta play the game at full bore(mentally) in order to get a good score....

I approved them earlier today :)
Also its www.thegamesanctum.com/arcadetube/

you spelled it wrong haha.

This is a great thread and I really appreciate the tips. I haven't played in a while but this thread got me back on the game. I still have a long way to go to get better but I'm having fun. I keep making stupid mistakes and getting hit by a fireball because I spending too much time concentrating on a different area.

You've got to love a game that is 5 games in 1!

I just wanna say, Great video!! You should go for the world records on galaxian and space invaders now haha

Man I tell ya I'm a LONG way off on those 2 games! 4,500 on space invaders and I think I was lucky to get that. 44K on Galaxian and also lucky. Those 2 boards play differently on Gorf; and also, the controller on Gorf is really my strong point. I'm very comfortable with it. Also, on Gorf you can move up and down, not just sideways. And you can cancel a missed shot by firing again, something you can't do on the original Galaxian and SI....

Ahh I see, I have only played Gorf once in my life, and it was short lived haha. How strong is your world record? Is it something people are close to or is it barely hanging there??
