GORF Finally Enters The Outer Limits

Not exactly failing........but that guy who rebuilt it, needs to work on his soldering skills!;)

Edward

Ah, well that happens.

I tried rebuilding 2 with Bob Roberts cap kits and neither of them produced anything different :(

Come on Ed, it wasn't entirely my fault. Bob's -5V regulator legs (LM-whatever) were too short to reach thru the holes when the screw was in place on that big-ass heatsink. In trying to build a solder bridge to reach from pad to stubby legs, I held the iron on those spots too long and burned the pads. I also didn't reflow all the solder on the headers like I should have. My iron tip is also as wide a schwein these days (time for a new one, I know) so it's hard to do delicate work, yet somehow I replaced that tiny chip on the power board, so go figure.

WOW!!! Those pictures simply look AMAZING! The atmosphere you have created by your wall artwork really shines through. I always smile every time I see 'the pocket' created specifically for the Ms. Pac Mini. ;)

As for Gorf....the lights in the stick always seem to be cracked solder on the header pins and the ranking lights bad transistors....or at least that is what I have always found. I replaced my lower bezel lights with the same 15W bulbs (found them at a local aquarium supply place) pretty darn cheap....and yes....they are pretty bright....but the entire Gorf game lit up to me is a fantastic looking cabinet so I don't mind the attention it draws....

Alan

Hey thanks Alan! I was looking at the pics thinking, "Does that really look as cool as I think it does?" Apparently so. Good deal.

Your poor Tempest. Everyone else plays theirs all the time, but yours has been a fuck story the entire time you have owned it. Ive thought about picking one up, but after hearing your horror stories Ive decided to run far, far away.

No doubt, picked it up working, decided to follow the advice to have the monitor rebuilt before any 'problems' occurred. Ever since that time, I have had nothing but problems. I'm on my 2nd big blue, 3rd board set and have replaced the edge connectors to the PCB. Now my monitor just goes black randomly then will come back on, go black, come back on, etc. I am suspecting the big amp/molex connector that plugs into the frame, as the issue seems intermittent. Sucks cuz I love the game, but am scared to play it or even turn it on anymore.

Phet, I was just teasing. One thought, your solder looked like lead free solder.....if this is true, once you run out.....do not buy any more lead free solder. Get some 60/40 mix.

And yes, that game room is bad-ass. I just showed the pictures of your walls/game room to my wife. Even she (a non-gamer), though they were cool as shit. She told me I should get that dude to do the walls of my shop.....had to break the news to her, you're 800 miles away:)

Least I'm still good for something. *sniff*

That just sounds like a major fluke to me. I've owned 3 Tempests over the years and they have all been pretty solid once I rebuilt the monitor. Gotcherself a lemon I guess. Gorf looks great. Every time I see the name of your gameroom I think of the show. I loved that show back in the day.
