Starting today, we are doing a test on the main site (Encyclopedia pages) for which a Google Consumer Survey will pop up the first time someone visits in a 24 hour period. People can either answer the anonymous question, or take an alternative action (like Facebook 'like' the page).
During the first 30 days of the test, we have very little control over the frequency surveys are displayed on the pages. After that time, we can leave them as is, customize the options, slow them down (how often they display), or take them down entirely.
Every question that is answered results in a tiny payment to help with the maintenance and improvement of the site. Whether or not it ends up being material is to be seen.
As an alternate test, we may try the Surveys on the forums too. If we do, it won't be seen by logged in users at all.
Additionally, the surveys are not set to display for users using Safari (including Macs, iPads, and iPhones).
If you have any questions or comments about this, please feel free to send me a PM. Thanks.

UPDATE: In a couple hours I can edit it so it doesn't display at all for users that are logged in. I think we'll start it off that way.
UPDATE2: 9/11/13 9:00 AM. It has now been set up so the surveys are not displayed to logged in users. Also, a note has been put on on the game pages explaining the survey and explaining that besides taking the survey or completing a like, that logging in will also avoid them.
UPDATE3: 9/14/13 8:30 AM. The surveys have run for 3 complete days now. We will likely let them run for 7 days, and then the current plan is to take them down from the encyclopedia pages and to put them up in the forums for a test-- to be seen by visitors that are not logged in.
UPDATE4: 9/23/13 6:43 PM. The surveys were taken down from the main site, and the test moved here. As mentioned, being logged in is the recommended method to avoid the surveys. Tonight Google tried to implement our request to update the survey code on their side to change the alternate action from a 'like' to a message encouraging people to log in. It looks like that update isn't working perfectly. The surveys work, but the message for the alt action is missing.
