Good driving games (other than World Rally)

I think california speed might be able to go both standard and medium rez, but you will still have control issues..

No, its med. res. only. You'd also have multiple PCB's, hard drive, force feedback for the steering wheel ect. Think of it as Cruis'n, but with even more hardware. With the money you'd spend on parts you could buy a nice sitdown driving game.

For that game I would do nothing more than put a cheap JAMMA PCB like Final Lap or something to that effect, or sell it in hope of raising funds for another driver.

I think that is very sound advice. Either turn it into a JAMMA cab you want or sell it to someone that wants a World Rally and hunt for a driving game you really want. Every stand up driver that I can think of benefits from being in its dedicated cabinet and not so much in something like this.

As for opinions on best arcade driving game...sit down: Rush 2049 > everything. Yes. EVERYTHING.

Stand up: Can't go wrong with Outrun. Chase H.Q. is alright, but an acquired taste (and can get old). Pole Position 1 or 2...if you can brave the possible maintenance nightmare. Virtua Racing is alright standing up, although sitdown is preferred. This is all off the top of my head.

Outrun! lol.

Ok it's not for everyone, but I played the hell out of it BITD... and it certainly is a true classic. As much as I liked it then, it's just too repetitive of a game to stay in my collection...

That setup is almost exactly like the one on my Great 1000 Mile Rally (Mille Miglia). It is a great game for kids and drunken party guests :14:.

All it needs is a steering wheel and an accellerator. You have plenty of choices of cars and tracks and no matter how often you crash, you don't die!!!! (which is a definite plus with small kids)

Ok, i went through this same thing a couple of years ago - and let me make some clarifications.
First - World Rally and Great 1000 Mile Rally are very very similar, and both use a high/low shifter.
On the shifter note, some final laps (I know FL2 and FL-R) are high low shifters as well (as i own them both-you can also verify via the schematics).
FL's are jamma, but iirc, they use a second connector to control the steering with.
One that i really like is Top Speed by Taito - not a jamma game, but easy enough to wire up. Its so close to Outrun, that i actually sold my outrun pcb. It also has a nitro boost.

Wow, I forgot about Outrun. That was a great game. Top Speed looks like it might be a winner. I'm gonna have to check out some prices on boards & stuff. Thanks.

outrun is fun, but its a huge pita to wire - you almost need to find a full harness from one to use. I mean it has a ton of connectors, and oddball stuff at that, iirc, it uses 2 or 3 ide cables, plus, you'd lose the feedback steering without some serious mods to your cab.
