Until Jersey Jack Pinball actually RELEASES a game... the slogan is 100% accurate.
They're not even the only manufacturer in the US...
http://www.retropinball.net/index.html
They make their games in China. ...and I wouldn't quite call them a manufacturer. They've done a one-off repro that no one gives a shit about.
They have a warehouse full of new games in York, PA that are selling. You not giving a shit sure doesn't equal everyone.
Doesn't matter if they're selling them out of a rotted out box van. They are building and selling brand new pinball machines, so Stern isn't the only manufacturer of pinball machines in the US, let alone the world as they claim.
Until Jersey Jack Pinball actually RELEASES a game... the slogan is 100% accurate.
* Gene produced BBB and is supposed to be working on Kingpin and Wizard Blocks. He has produced games; he says he's continuing to produce games.
* Retro Pinball, LLC is producing The King of Diamonds game, and it's being shipped as we speak (http://www.retropinball.net/index.html)
* Ben Heck produced a completely original pinball game: http://benheck.com/03-16-2010/bill-paxton-pinball and plans to produce more. Other enthusiasts such as Jeri Ellsworth and many others are doing the same.
* Whizbang pinball is producing the "Whoa Nellie!" game - http://whizbangpinball.blogspot.com/
The bottom line is that Stern are a bunch of liars. They know. Everybody else knows it. You have to wonder what kind of company they are when they insult the entire rest of the pinball community by making such ridiculous claims. If they want to say they're the "largest manufacturer of pinball games", that's true. If they want to say they're the "oldest manufacturer still making pinball games", that's true, but it's a slap in the face to hundreds of other people in the industry to say they're the "only" maker. It's bullshit.
Why anyone wants to be an apologist for what is obviously a bald-faced lie is beyond me. You can still be a fan of Stern and their products without pretending you live in some alternate reality where whatever line they feed people is taken as the uncontested truth.
OK, I'll bite. To me, the quote "The only maker of REAL pinball games on the planet" means they're the only fully functioning factory designing NEW games and manufacturing pinball machines for arcade use...this is what they do all day/all night... with 100% pinball infrastructure and support.
Did Gary Stern fuck your sister? The anger...the rage...it's only pinball!![]()
I see. So maybe Stern should change their slogan to:
The only maker of REAL pinball machines on the planet, as defined by some anonymous dude on the Internet named "RareHero"
yea... that has a nice ring to it...
I just don't like lies. Stern's slogan is obviously a lie. The only way it's not considered a lie is when people have to pull some semantic BS and try to creatively interpret what is meant by stupid adjectives like "real", or put some special spin on what "manufacturer" means...
Common sense pretty much defines what these things mean, until apologists come in and try to come up with some bizarre condition where the phrase might be considered "true."
I find it dishonest. Disingenuous.
Stern is obviously taking a pot shot at the other producers in the industry by making that claim. If they really produced good, solid, games, they wouldn't need to employ childish put-downs towards the competition in their company slogan.
That's just my opinion. Yours may vary. But the truth is the truth. If you have to rationalize that much to make their slogan seem "accurate", chances are, you're not that close to what would commonly be considered the truth.
Stern's slogan is analogous to Fox News saying they're "Fair and Balanced." It's a load of horse-hockey and an insult to peoples' intelligence. At the same time, I recognize not everyone may care enough to be insulted or have enough to be insulted. So your mileage may vary, but I dislike it when companies engage in deceptive advertising. I don't see why Stern has to stoop to something like that. It's not going to serve their interests in the long run.
On the other hand, if Gary Stern's passive-aggressive attacks at JJP result in them being even more motivated to kick Stern's ass, it will be a win-win situation for pinball. I think the fact that Stern has to levy some childish claim like they're "the only real maker" is a sign of how desperate and intimidated they are by JJP.
I love ya brothah, but.. fuuuuck....get over it. It's just not worth it. It's a fucking slogan, like "Genesis Does What NintenDON'T" ...was that "100% True" ..of course not! McDonald's current slogan is "You want it, need it, you gotta have a taste of McDonald's burgers" ...that's a lie! Well, in my case anyway.
Look, Jack will have his own slogans....
JERSEY JACK PINBALL:
"The biggest, best, most modern pinball machine maker in the universe!"
or
JERSEY JACK PINBALL:
"Our games don't suck!"
or
JERSEY JACK PINBALL:
"Play our games, or we'll break your fuckin' legs!!!!"
Im very excited about the new pins from jersey jack and i hope they have great success.
that said,I must tip my hat to gary stern for single-handedly keeping the pinball flame lit for 11 years. sterns pins may not be perfect, but its a whole lot better than no pins at all.
i also believe that stern has been using the tag line "the only maker of reaL pinball machines on earth for some time.not just to stick it to jersey jack.
...i also believe that stern has been using the tag line "the only maker of real pinball machines on earth" for some time.
Will be interesting to see if they change the slogan next year or not. That said....am I the only one that thinks the LCD screen is a horrendous idea? How the hell am I supposed to look up at that thing to see what's going on?
Better have some long-ass ball lock sequences when modes start and stuff. Sheesh.
