gomez officially joins stern as "vice president of game development"

Am I the only one who is bothered by, "The world's only maker of real pinball games?"

I do not understand why Stern has to use such an obviously phony slogan?

Maybe JJP can up the ante with, "The world's only maker of good pinball games?"

until WOZ is actually released, i guess they're technically right.

as for the stern-hate......meh.

JJP - The only maker of annoyingly distracting score displays and fuuuuuuugly backglass. :)

About a week ago I just rewatched "Tilt: The Battle to Save Pinball" which prominently features Gomez. I'm excited to see what he'll bring to the "table". I wonder what he's been working on lately up until joining Stern.

Maybe my friend and I will be able to toss our hates in the ring in the, hopefully, not too distant future? Working on basic layout ideas, etc etc... who knows.

As for the Stern hate... They're cutting too many corners now. We have a Tron pinball here that was bought new and already has the slingshot rubbers falling apart, there's no way to prop up the playfield without having someone standing there holding it up for you or ghetto rigging something and hoping for the best. Their glass retainer lock system they have in it is a joke... etc etc. Their LE's are a joke also... you pay the extra couple of thousand bucks and they won't toss in a shaker (that's already programmed into the game?!), etc etc... there's just too much penny pinching going on there.

They need to get back on top of their game or they're going to be the "last maker of 'real' pinball machines to go out of business" here soon.

I think Stern thinks they are doing just fine. They sell tons of machines and have no problem clearing inventory. I hate the lock bar too but really is it the end of the world you have 2 latches instead of the traditional assembly.

Cutting costs is alot of American Business's alive right now. They make a luxury item that not everyone can buy. Collectors hardly buy Stern machines new <I base that info on all the hate on the forums> besides Tron it seems like everyone buys a Stern machine pre-played when they can get a cheap deal.

I hate the 2 stupid black poles instead of the traditional bars to keep the playfield up but its not the end of the world.

As far as shaker motors go you can say the same thing about a car that has a few options that you want......Well sir the car is capable of holding a hemi engine so why dont you just throw that in... Just a quick analogy.

Rubbers are rubbers and thats all im gonna say about that.

I usually dont chime in on the hate posts against Stern but common......

They have to make a game first.

Until Jersey Jack Pinball actually RELEASES a game... the slogan is 100% accurate.

I was listening to some PODcasts coming back from CAX... came across one where Python absolutely lays in to many folks...including Gomez. It seems he doesn't like Gomez much.

Car analogies? K.

Instead of the engine, it's more like you don't have that little $2 coil that you push into the cigarette lighter socket. The socket is there, but if you want that $2 coil piece, they'll be happy to sell it to you for an extra $35.

You drive the car new off the lot, and 2 of the tires start to shred 2 weeks later after normal use.

Later you need to check the oil, but you can't even get to the dipstick without having a friend come by to hold the hood up for you.

When you're paying several thousand dollars for something like this, you'd expect some things to just be there, at least. It's not the end of the world, true, but if they keep going at this rate, it could be the end of Stern.

And "hate post", please... I have nothing against Stern, it's just these cutting corners crap is going to catch up with them eventually. A large portion of their market is hobbyist... that's usually the type of people you don't want to cut corners with. Having already had to work on the Tron machine, I can tell you that those little legs are a joke.

For something positive... the system they have for upgrades is very nice. Having the USB port there to just plug a drive into is very convenient; and will hopefully be used soon when they fix the audio bugs in their config menus... But I would have gladly traded that for, at least, proper playfield supports.

I could handle the "cutting corners" if it:

1) It led to lower prices for Stern *and* customers/operators, while still maintaining a decent profit margin for Stern.

2) The games were still entertaining for the majority of players out there.

3) The games were *reliable*, requiring as little maintenance as possible for the operator/owner.

4) The lower prices led to increased volume, leading to more machines on location, hopefully leading to more interest/demand for pinball in general.

For pinball to eventually regain some market share and popularity with the masses, they have to have more out in the public on location, where folks can see/play them. I want the best, coolest, most hi-tech pin's out there too, but if we're going to see the industry recover long-term, I can see why Stern might go in the current direction - even if they're not meeting all the criteria above.

Otherwise, if the volume continues to creep downward, I don't see things improving for anybody. I'd rather have "cost cutting" pinball machines on the market rather than no pinball machines on the market.

this is more good news. having Steve Ritchie and George Gomez at stern will undoubtedly bring forth some amazing new pins.and having jersey jack releasing wizard of oz and more titles to follow will only increase the number of pins on location and in our homes. i say LONG LIVE PINBALL!

You better be sorry! ASSHOLE!!!!! How dare you like things that are fun. FEH!

:)

All I can say is 8 ball multiball is pretty damn hilarious, and dumping 5 pinballs on a playfield from nowhere was totally unexpected the first time I played IJ...about whizzed myself.

Tron is so much of an enigma I just don't get it. I understand the mechanics of the game. I got 50-70 million scores consistently the week after release, they move it across the building, I can't crack 20 million, and the only difference seems to be it's on LESS of an incline. I can't deal with that machine being slow!

Let me know when you have a couple million dollars to make it happen and I'll give you some of my ideas :p

They do exactly that nowadays. Now it's an "accessories outlet".
