I have a goldeneye I was working on and finished up. Needless to say 2 weeks later the sound is gone except for a low to high pitch humming sound. No game sounds or music. If I take the chips out it goes away all together. I already replaced the sound roms with new ones as well. Any tips for me?

Got all your DC voltages? Have you checked the volume pot for correct operation at CN3 pins 1, 2, and 3?

I'd check the EPROMS to ensure the sticker label hasn't fallen off and mangled a PROM from the back light for good measure.

Next I'd meter out the resistors by the sound AMP to ensure they're all in spec.

Since you work in a shop I'll assume you also have a PROM burner. My gut instinct is to replace the sound PROMS.

Im self taught and my main guy is on vacation. I said I replaced all the sound roms but is there something different that you speak of?

Getting ready to check the resistors now.

Sorry I missed the fact you already swapped out the sound roms. Yep check the resistors next.

This is what I'd do:

1) Since you're a shop, you've probably got another whitestar sound board to swap in. Do that first.
2) If it works, you know the sound board has an issue (caps, one of the chips, etc). If it doesn't, then there's some other sort of issue (power, cpu board, perhaps the ribbon cable).

My guess is it's a power issue (not getting 5 volts). But that's just my random guess.

my +5 is 4.9 and my +12 is 13.3.

Your voltages are good. I'd visually inspect each and every chip to ensure you don't have a leg sticking out, bent leg not making contact or crud on a leg causing poor connection. Primary focus would be on the BMST2000 chip.

I just noticed when I leave it on, I get a few sounds before I start a game. I get it to say "bond, James Bond" and it seems to play the right sounds when it does the whole digital stereo thing.

Also when a game starts you get the initial start of the song with the da daa da daa then it hums again. After that its nothing but humming. This is the same humming mind you I had before I replaced the chips. Ill go double check everything.

edit- The weird thing I just noticed is that when I select regular instead of novice I get almost the whole theme song intro.

The bmst2000 looks good.

For good measure re-crimp the audio cable. Put it in a vice and apply light pressure.

No change. It seems like it works fine right up until the game starts. My mind is boggled. I wish I had an extra board here to just swap and eliminate some of the guesswork.

These Whitestar boards are a MAJOR PITA to trouble shoot. My last suggestions is to check/replace (IIRC) the RAM @ U4 and U20. I don't have a manual in front of me so I'm not sure if both of these are RAM. It'd sure be nice if you had another BMST2000 chip to try.

If you have static coming out of the speakers then I'd safely assume the LM833 audio amp chip is working.

Sorry I'm plum out of ideas for you.

Hey np,

Thanks for all the tips. I have time restraints on this to get it fixed so I might just ship it off to Stern and let them handle it. Ill give it till the end of the day.

Thanks though.

Not the same problem as you, but I have a South Park that one day had no sound. Turns out it was a short between two caps in the sound area of the board. Some extra solder had made a connection between two capacitors and caused a short. Got lucky by buzzing out the sound area of the board. Might be worth a look.
