I will be getting a Golden Tee Fore 2004 next week and I would like to know what my options for upgrading are. For instance, if I were to go to a 2005, can I just pop in a new hard drive, or do I need a new board ect. What are my options?

2004 can be upgraded to 2005 and I believe the GT Complete is also an option. You will need a new boot ROM and the HD. The boot ROM is coded with what version will be allowed to run.

Is it RED boards can only be upgraded? Or both RED & GREEN can?
I wish somebody would share that hacked boot rom so I could get me some Golden Tee Complete!

So I can keep the same board and just get a new drive and chip, and it can be upgraded to complete? That would be sweet.

Drop the coin on the complete kit.

Its got '02-'05 on there. All 29 courses.

Its like 1000 bucks.

Both can be upgraded. Green can run 02-05 and complete and IIRC older WCB. Red boards will run all previous, plus newer versions as well as SSB and Bags.

Has anyone done it yet? I have not heard of it or it must be on the down low.

You can find them cheaper. Just be patient. I upgraded mine to '05 from '99, and I wish I hadnt spent the money once the complete kit came out.

Theres a kit on the bay for $600 BIN. Put all your 2004 stuff on there to recoup some of the $$$.

I dont think I have seen cheaper than $600.

Silver Strike, Bags, and/or Golden Tee Live do not use these game boards. They all run off ITS's Nighthawk Computer Systems. World Class Bowling uses the Golden Tee 96-2K boards.

You can upgrade a 2004 golden tee with a security chip and a CD using a CD-ROM. You also used to have to force a call to ITS with a security code to unlock the update. I'm not sure if they are still requiring this as it's been a few years since I've done one. There's probably an offline kit available now.

I used to operate several GT games, and would like to clear up some of the confusion about the GT boards,

Red boards are the newer version - the difference - the power supply no longer goes through the Jamma harness. To switch to a red board in a normal jamma cabinet you would need to also switch the power supply, wheras with a green board you would be good to go.

The Green boards are perfectly usable and play exactly like the Red boards. To the player there is no differnce. For the operator, the Red boards are more reliable for commercial day in/day out use, but in home use you will not notice a differnce.

As for updating, I would be very carefull about buying any kit that you load onto your own board. The original kits can only be used once and had to dial to IT to finalize the update. I don't think the IT line is working any longer even if you could find a kit that hadn't been used. BE VERY CAREFULL (read: you can't upgrade without getting a PCB and Drive)

OK so we've got that out of the way. What are your upgrade options? You have a 2004 PCB and Drive. (Actually that is a good year). It will be easier to stay with the same color PCB series so you don't have power supply issues. Obviously as metioned you could get the 05 or even the Complete and be done with it, but don't forget you could also get the 03 or 02 or even the first GT fore - 01. The older years are just as fun as the newer ones - just stay in the Fore series. Each of the individual years can be found fairly cheaply. $100 to 200 for PCB and Drive. The 05 can be found also as 05extra with 2 extra courses.

-----begin shameless plug----

In case anyone is interested, I have a Golden Tee 2005 Red board and drive for $150.
or a Golden Tee 2005 Extra Red board and drive for $200.
or a Golden Tee Complete Green board and drive for $500.

All prices include shipping, marquee, PCB, disk drive and drive cable.

Yes, Smalltownguy is correct. Any updates must be sent to Incredible Technologies for the update to be done. You used to be able to plug the pcb in a phone line, force a call to IT, and enter your code on the screen. Then it would update. This authorization feature has been discontinued by IT. Now they make you send in the pcb, drive, CD, and chip. Last one I had done cost about $60.
So.......the only good option when buying these kits on Ebay is to buy a working pcb and hard drive assembly with the software already loaded and working.

I thought I would bump this thread rather than start a new one.

I currently have a GT 2005. I inside the cabinet was upgrade boxes with security chips and CD's. When you force the call in to IT (no longer available) does it just activate or update a registry key on the HDD or does it activate something in the chip.

I am asking because I would like to be able to get a few extra hard drives and just swap the chips and drives to be able to play the older years courses.

Also, does anyone know if I can use any HDD or does it have to be specific makes/models?

Thanks

Nevermind. I called GT and they said that you can't go back to the older versions once you have upgraded and the authorization is on the HDD with is also married t the sescurity chip. If anyone knows of any hacks to get around this, I am all ears.
