High Side Swtich x 7 in the "standard" way (that I do anyways). Similarly to the attached pic, but instead of the NPN bjt shown, I used an NCHAN FET. Identical code and function in this use case. There would be 7 of these, each getting 12v from the power connector and the "Load" is connected to the coresponding pin 1-7 on the LED connector.

Sweet. Thank you Much.

That is what I think I needed to start my hack.

Just a off the head question, will the Pi be using the same output style as the arduino?

So if I make this driver board, will I need to add anything to it later to convert to the Pi?

I am SUPER Excited to start this project. I really want my topper to work. :)

Just a FYI those links go directly to a search page for me, not a product.

I actually have it working on a spark. Look at particle.io. Cheap little connected board that runs nice realtime, is arduino ish. Need a little more work but I have the prototype working already via cellular, and wifi should be doable easily next.

I'll look those connectors up again. They are a standard 0.156 spacing header.

Also the wifi board is called a photon. The output circuit is the same, the logic connections are going to need a level shift.

I am going to bump this up to the top and hope that the Original Poster has came up with more information. Have you ported this to the Pi yet?

I switched away from porting it to the Pi. I have it running on a Photon from particle.io its a nice platform for wifi connectivity. This project is still moving along, but slowly... its about 3rd on the priority list right now. My next couple hundred bucks will probably go this projects way.

Can anyone tell me if the data cable for the sign is a straight through RJ12?

I have not had any movement on the replacement board. I would love to finish this project but it's really far down on my list. :(

Your killing us Smalls... LOL Last you posted it was 3rd in line. Has that changed?
How about if we offer you a go fund me page or something to help you get the parts needed?

I bought a topper quite a while ago when this was first posted as working but needs tweaking, and I really want to have it work. It looks so sad sitting all dark in the corner. LOL :)

It's killing me too. It's not really about money so a go fund me isn't going to help. It's just been a crazy year. Sorry. I have two toppers myself, one running like you see above on an arduino, and one that is looking at me sadly waiting for some hours.

In theory I will have some time in the next couple of months. We ended up fixing and selling our old house and we are in our new house next week.

Any updates or any help that the KLOV community can help you with? let us know

I actually picked this project back up a couple weeks ago. My proto pcbs arrived on Friday and I think I'm a week worth of free time from having it running.

I chose a particle.io photon/electron compatible board. The electron is 3 bucks a month but is cellular, photon is wifi and is free of monthly bills. I have some basic text tools already running. I'll post some pics in a new thread if the prototypes worth well enough to share!
