golden tee TOURNAMENT PLAY LED DISPLAY TOPPER

With the weather in our area I haven't had much time to mess with it, I have both versions so no pics needed.

Im hoping to hook one up to an actual board to see how they talk but need to make an rs232 test rig for that.

Such things are beyond the scope of what I'm capable of doing, but it always seemed to me that the way to attack this problem would be to skip the IT electronic components altogether, and make a separate board that could be attached directly to the wires of the led matrix... Arduino driven, maybe?

I'm sure someone who knows more about the header setup could explain why that might not be an option.

I'll up my offer to $150 for anyone who can come up with a solution that's easily reprogrammable, and just does a simple scroll of the messages I want...

mine doesn't seem to work or I would mess with it, if you power it up not connected to a game board should it do anything?

If you power it up without being hooked to anything it still gives messages. I think mine said something about the last date updated. I'll have to go check again and see what it says.

There are only the 4 pin connector and a ground cable connected to mine. Not sure how the data for the sign is getting from the pcb up to the light board but wanted to Che I and see if any progress has been made on cracking this puzzle

With either version theres a phone jack on it that would connect to a main board.

I spent some time on it but been doing some repairs lately...I want to plug it into an actual board to see what gets moved back and forth. I do have a couple ideas.

They should at least light up with a generic message without any data cable attached. The message is store in nonvolatile flash ram so it doesnt need a battery or anything.

Just curious... For those on here replying... Do you have the single pcb surface mount version or the dual-pcb through hole version?

I have a surface mount pcb but wonder when I bought my golden tee, I removed this data cable and so only the power tyco 4 wire cable and the 1 cable ground cable are attached. The message advertising the courses still scrolls like normal. Also in this picture is my Ethernet/phone line data cable connector on the board suppose to be without the connect casing? Don't know if this will help or not but as I'm going through my stash of toppers I am noticing there are several different versions of the PCB's in the signs. Versions 5 and 6 are small PCBs hooked to the rear of the sign case and then there is another version (not sure of the number) that the PCB is actually the back side of the display. This last version only has the phone jack input where as versions 5 and 6 also have headers for a modem and game PCB. Version 5 also has a batter on it.

I have discovered that these store the last information saved on them regardless of PCB version. Thus they will display the last location with only 12v power. No need to hook them up to the game PCB.

Blkdog7 has his setup where it shows the current date and that would be a start. I talked with John and he doesn't remember how he set it up that way since it was so many years ago. Anyone else know how to at least get the current date on the topper? Still interested in the reprogram feature of the topper to be figured out. I have money ready to pay for this.

I really think all I did was set it up in the menu and it sent the correct date and time to the unit. Dunno.
