Just picked up a Golden Tee fore! 2005 extra! And pretty much everything works except some times when I turn the machine on the marquee lights do no not light up. I was just gonna replace the light but I turned it on today and everything lit up. This is frustrating. Any ideas?

usually if it is florescent light and it is black on the ends, replacing the bulb should do it. It may even need a starter.

The lamp and starter are probably old and need replacement. The floresent light is a 15 watt bulb and the starter is a FS-2, both available at your local hardward store.

If the starter is bad would that explain why it comes on sometimes?

Probably the bulb but while you got it apart you might as well change it also. Should all be less than $20.

To answer you question YES...If the starter is bad that can cause it to come on sometimes.

Also a bad bulb will kill the starter and sometimes if you just touch the bulb it will light up.

Starter may be weak, as well as the tube.

Those tubes need a 'kick start' to come on. That's the starter's job.

Tube may be weak as well - every now and then they pair up to successfully light and stay lit, but not very often.

If a new tube is going to be installed, it's a good idea to replace the starter too. An aging starter can cause damage to a new tube and shorten its life.

This page has lots of good info.

Replace both - it'll save you money in the long run.

Is the bulb and starter easy to access? I'm assuming I just unscrew the marquee brackets to get in there.

Yes, very easy to access. Both items are 'twist lock' to install and un-install.

The bulb fixture should be right behind the marquee. Most time the starter is plugged in right behind the lamp. I have seen a few fixtures where the starter is located behind the board that the lamp sockets are screwed to, but there's usually just 2 screws holding in the lamp fixture. Unscrew them, pull out the board (or just slide it forward a bit to get to the back), and then you should see the starter on the backside of the board.
