Golden Tee 3D artifacts in video.

I have a Golden Tee 3D board that has some video glitches on screen. Severity varies with image and moves with time. More color/less black seems to mean more serious glitches. RAM test passes. Board test passes. Full GROM test passes. Fast GROM test was failing until I cleaned and reseated the GROM chips, not it passes repeatedly. Is GROM short for Graphics ROM? Are fast and full what I think they are? i.e. quick vs. thorough? If so, does it seem odd that a through test was passing while a quick test failed?

Also, operator mode functions normally but I can't get out of operator mode regardless of the dip setting or even shorting the dip pins (on = normal). I've tested, and closing dip 1 does ground the signal line all the way back to U20, a non-inverting line driver. The corresponding output of U20 is pulsing. Normal or bad? Oddly, the manual offers two suggestions for stuck in test mode. One is check Dip 1, the other is check the speaker connections. huh?!? I'm putting this in a GT97 cab that's fully functional. There is only one mono speaker on the jamma harness, while the 3D board has connections for L&R. Surely leaving one of the audio channels open isn't causing perpetual test mode....

Any ideas where to start?

these boards are pretty notorious for their shitty build quality. I've never dealt with one myself, but the best I can come up with for you is a list of other games that run on the hardware: http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=806

at least that'll open up some more search opportunities. like maybe there's another game that runs on the same boardset with the same problem. I don't know the differences between the games, like you said, GT '97 is mono only and GT 3D has stereo capability. I doubt the speakers will cause this problem though lol

did you try taking apart the different parts of the board and reconnecting them? it definitely looks like the problem you have is in the video section.
