So, I had this machine which nobody bought from me a while back... well, I just tried playing now.... nothing. No boot. I don't know if it's the hard drive or what, but I thought I'd ask you guys what's up. The mother board only has three of the four red lights light up, and the IDE light doesn't light at ALL. Is this just the hard drive, or what?

You should still get stuff on the screen during startup even without a HD. But lack of IDE activity does indicate a HD issue. What about the 2 green LED lights? Those should be active and blinking like a heartbeat. If not, you also have a board issue too.

THe hard drives fail on these all the time as they have many moving parts in them. Most likely do to dust buildup or heat. I'd replace this 1st. A guy on ebay sell these for about $25

Dust build-up? C'mon... Heat I'll take, but dust? A HD is sealed and dust is unlikely.

You *could* try a new drive, but without the board working you would just be throwing away $25 bucks. Even with out a HD attached you STILL will get the startup picture on the screen. Without a picture and the lack of one of the green LEDs, look at the video card, or PCB -- not the drive.

During boot, you will see "detecting IDE hard drive" on the screen. If you can't get to that point, it is senseless to try a new drive.

strongly agree. still got a board and drive if you needo one.

Here's a thing I'm not telling you. The last time it worked was BEFORE my pulling out the control panel to fix a button. I wonder if I pulled a wire. I checked connections, and will do it again. I wonder what to look for. I think, by the sounds of it, the HD is not the problem.

Wire... maybe. But if you have a dead LED on the board you should start there. You can verify if you have all the power wires correctly connected to the PCB and at the correct voltage. Not sure how you have it all connected, but the recommended method is via the power by-pass cable directly to the PCB and not through the JAMMA connector.

Which greed LED is not blinking -- D5A or D20? A non-functioning LED indicates a program is not running. Check all socketed ICs that they are seated correctly.

One green is blinking steady, D5A ..... and one is just solid on, D20. Out of the four red LEDs, "TX" doesn't light up at all. RX takes a while, but it comes on. And, again, the IDE light doesn't blink a damn bit. I can hear that the HD is in fact running, but still.

How do I hook up power without the JAMMA directly? This is intriguing.

Okay, after looking at the manual, the two power bypass cables are plugged in. If I unhook them, the game board doesn't turn on at all, but this shouldn't be a surprise? I know that I have one unhooked, and it doesn't seem to matter, while the other seems to be doing everything. Is that a clue, or is it normal for one to not seem to power ANYTHING?

need some pics to know what youre talkin about.

I just fired mine up to verify, and both green LEDs should blink. Do not worry too much about the "TX" & "RX". I belive these are just the "transmit" and "receive" LEDs when the modem connects to the IT network. Mine just eventually times out and stops trying, and I think you can shut this off in the setup.

I agree a pic would help and do plug in both power connectors to the board.

Other stuff to check.
1. Check the voltage at the boot ROM.
2. Verify the IDE cable is connected correctly and to the right slot (closest to the edge connector)

Voltages seem fine. Never unconnected anything to have to reconnect. Here's a pic, if it helps:

those are your molex power supply connectors. Im assuming one comes from the PSU and connects to the board to supply power and the other goes from the board to the HD to supply power to it. I got a red board so mine is a little different. If you check all your connections, reseat your roms, double check voltage, etc. etc. I would say you got a bad board.

I know this is an old thread, but it was an unresolved problem and I had the same problem that I did resolve, just thought I'd share.

I recently took a Golden Tee 2005 on trade, and it was said to be working before delivery but when I got it it was dead. I tried reseating all my socketed chips, cleaned the edge connector, new power supply, then new compact flash drive... Nothing happening on the screen but redness, and no booting whatsoever.

So I pulled the board, everything looked golden, no corrosion etc.
I pulled the video card out of it's socket and reinstalled it and that is what got me going. I hope that helps someone.

+1 That is actually quite a common fix. But it is not really known. The Video card connections DO corrode a bit and if they don't make proper contact you can get a LED that will not blink. I pink eraser mine and re-seat it a few times that seems to fix 99% of that problem.

I just tried this and didn't get the board to come on. At the moment its pretty much just like the OP's issue. IDE activity and D20 LED's are staying on (no blinking) while D5A isn't coming on at all. I really cleaned the video connector and connected and disconnected it several times before hooking everything back up. Still nothing. Any other thoughts?
