I have a couple of Golden Tee 2005 red boards and hard drives. One works, the other has issues. We know it's the hard drive. The "problem" hard drive makes the game play choppy, with pauses and freezes in both audio and video. When we swap in the "good" hard drive, the games both play perfectly. So, we know it's the hard drive. Now, the question...

Is the actual drive bad, or does it just need re-imaged? If I re-image it, do I need to somehow erase the "bad" image first, or just follow the instructions on the Killer Instinct CHDMAN page? Will the new image over-write/delete the bad stuff? Or do we think the actual hard drive is toast?

the data is corrupted for some reason. wether the disc motor is weak, or the thing got dropped and damaged the disc, either way dont waste your time. You might be able to reimage it, and it might even work, but it wont for long.

A good used/new drive are available for cheap(20-30 bucks) and imaging a hard drive is a pita.

Im cheap and even i just buy new drives when i need one.

I've had good luck with arcade-services.

Keep in mind some of these guys sell the larger drives and with golden tee, you may need to change the boot rom for it to work properly.

If your problem drive is bigger than the working one, well, that boot rom difference may be your issue.

Check out the arcade-services guy. Ive bought al my drives from him in thr past and will continue to do so.

"Locally" here you might want to pm topless z and see if he can hook you up.

I'D ask the arcade services guy about this.. Its the "xtra" so thats 7 courses instead of 5. Unsure if it works with a regular 2005 boardset and security chip.

If this drive works, you have a for sure fix and a upgrade all in one.

EDIT: FROM HIS LISTING...

"ONE LAST NOTE

THIS DRIVE CONTAINS THE EXTRA COURSES AND WILL WORK ON ANY GOLDEN TEE BOARD RED OR GREEN WITH OR WITHOUT THE EXTRA COURSES.

NOW IF THE EXTRA COURSES ARE NOT ALREADY INSTALLED ON YOUR BOARD THIS DRIVE WILL NOT ADD THEM AS THAT WAS AN UPGRADE OFFERED BACK IN 2004 AND 2005 AND IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE."

So basically if its got the chip for xtra when you put this drive on, it will show all the courses. If your board does not have the xtra chip, this drive works like a standard 2005 drive and youll still only have the 5 courses. either way, itll work. mabye youll get lucky and end up with a "free" upgrade too just depends.
