Going to be driving 14rs each way to get an original DK

Did I just lose my mind?

I'm leaving in a few hours to drive 14hrs to grab a original Donkey Kong....

I think this arcade thing has hit me hard.

Anyone else have crazy "I drove XXXX miles" stories?

The road trip sounds priceless. good luck.
As far as going for a Donkey Kong...probably should have saved your money for a Robotron. ;)

I would have to say I've been lucky that all my games have been from Michigan. My longest road trip was only 9 hours round trip for a Star Wars cockpit. I say kudos for your dedication to drive that far plus time with your son. Share pics when you get it unloaded! :)

We've resorted to sleeping in the back of the rental van when driving that far. Saves on hotels. We used to ship but then Michelle left STI.

I understand completely. My longest drive for games was to Dallas I think. I have also driven to Minneapolis (actually Avon which is further), Nebraska..Lincoln I think, and Kansas City. Nebraska was memorable as there was a snowstorm going on when I left, so I have some good pictures somewhere of the game on the trailer covered in snow. Of course it was all wrapped in blankets and tarps...probably warmer than I was. :)

I always think about the cost of driving vs shipping, but usually it seems to be either cheaper, i.e. I do it in one shot without sleeping, or I spend the night in my car...or if I do spend the night, it is close enough in cost that I would rather have the experience of traveling somewhere new, meeting new people, etc. and also know how the game is being handled.

But I have had many people call me crazy over the years. ;)

There was a guy on KLOV who was obsessed with getting a Warlords back before everyone else was as obsessed with it. I got one in a group buy and offered to pass it on. He drove from San Jose to Reno in a full on blizzard in a beat ass borrowed minivan to pick it up that weekend.

Found his old blog post:

Not a long trip, but certainly questionable weather. Took him over 8 hrs to get here (normally a 4 hr trip)

Longest for me was my first pickup. Sixteen hours round-trip. Everything else I've acquired has been within a couple hours of me at the most.

Have fun!

Well only 4 hrs away so stay tuned....

Have fun!! Make sure you get the game. I did a 16 hr round trip for a CC cocktail that I didn't even get! The guy basically lied to me. Not intentionally but didn't know what he was talking about.

After multiple LA trips, an AZ trip & a Utah trip
I HATE driving now!!

Was going to drive 6 hours each way for a Gyruss once then came to my senses the day before. Ended up trading for one months later one town away. Be safe and hope the seller was honest about everything.

Well.....WE GOT IT! :)

Game was as advertised. All original. The seller was the original owner who bought it in 1982. The only issue is the sticker art is peeling due to age but that is an easy fix. Got the original keys, manual, invoice and the cab is is amazing shape. He said he was partners on an arcade back in the day and the game was only used for 3 months and has been sitting in his house ever since. Game fired right up and the screen looks sharp as hell.

I'll post pics later tomorrow after we get back to SoCal. Son and I just pulled into Grand Junction for the night....it's been a long day...

PS: here are some teaser pics I got from the seller...

Craziest one I did was from South SF to Los Angeles and back in less than a day. I've since had the fortune of some arcade friends that were going back and forth to actually bring stuff back for me...

The craziest one I've heard was the F.U. Wyoming story from CarrieZ and 34k:

Have a great time!

Yup, I'm about to do the same thing. San Ramon to Fullerton. I leave in about 4 hours. Then come right back.

I'm dreading it to be honest with you. LOL How was your experience? Did it suck?

I drove about 7 hours round trip to get a battlezone, so your trip is like 4x longer than mine. But it was up in the mountains, during a pretty significant Colorado snowstorm, and my 4wd wasnt working right, so im counting that as at least 12 hours round trip worth of stress time.

So that's a long way to go to get a DK, but my theory is that drive is time is long forgotten when you're home enjoying the game. So good luck!

Did 22 hrs round trip with traffic and border hassles to Montreal with no stops for my pong. Left at 3am, returned home at 1am.
