Just picked up 2 asteroids. Boardsets are confirmed working. When the games are plugged in the red light on the deflection board stays on and thats it. What do I look for?

First, you should read through: www.crazykong.com/tech/bw_vector_monitor_faq.pdf if you haven't already. Do you have the G05-801 or 802?

The red light is the spot killer, which is basically a protection to keep a huge dot from burning into the middle of the screen when there's no deflection. Can you hear deflection chatter (kind of a clicking chattery sound) from the monitor?

Get the basic cap kit with the chassis transistors and install it. Then check the fuses. If that does not work then start troubleshooting.

Now the light is out and I hear chattering but nothing else. Someone told me to replace that black diode in the HV line. Does that sound right?

Do you have any high voltage? Have you tried adjusting the brightness/contrast? The HV diode could be bad, but you need to give a lot more info or do more troubleshooting (look though the FAQ) before concluding the diode is bad.

I pulled the black HV diode out and took the ohm meter and turned it to where it would make a noise when the leads are touched. Took them and touched the wire on both sides of the diode and no sound. Does that mean there is a break in the wire??

You can't test a HV diode like a regular diode so that really doesn't mean anything.

HV diode not the likely problem. Start with reflowing all solder joints on the deflection board. A good idea even if not the problem. Then go from there. Transistors next up.
