So I moved my Asteroids Deluxe to the other side of the room and powered it on and the sound was whisper quiet , messed with the volume pot , nothing happened . So I opened the back door to get a better look and noticed that the anode cup looked like it was covered in oil and from there it had been dripping on to the metal cage below . What does that mean ? Time for a new flyback ? The picture also started fading in and out pretty rapidly . Would the sound problem have anything to do with any of this ?

What in the world is on your anode cup? Can you clean it off? There isn't supposed to be anything dripping off of it. If it had a hole in the rubber, silicon glue could be used to seal it. Is what your seeing glue that was applied really poorly? Clean it all off and seal any holes on the cup right. Ken has posted the method numerous times.

All of these monitors came with some sort of dielectric schmutsie on them that got really nasty over the years. Clean all that old crap off with some degreaser and put a new coat on the anode cap before you re-install.

Thanks guys ! I'll get some degreaser and see what happens .
