Ghosts N Goblins Restoration

OK, here are some pics of my Ghosts N Goblins restore.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/37999418@N04/sets/72157622683942437/

I acquired this game from Phetishboy early this spring and have only now been able to complete it.

With the new baby in the house, I have only been able to grab a few minutes here, and hour or two there, but I was able to complete it in about 6 weeks, putting in about 50 hours total and an undisclosed amount of $$$.

Here is a basic rundown:

Remove and clean marquee, bezel and marquee bracket
Strip and repaint marquee bracket and screws
Remove control panel assembly, and strip completely to bare metal
Fill holes in CP from old plexi overlay and sand smooth, paint with black epoxy outdoor Rustoleum
Apply new GnG repro overlay from Quarterarcade, new long Wico leaf buttons and rebuild Wico Joystick with kit from Mikesarcade - new stick, e-clip, centering grommet and washers
Remove T-molding and strip cabinet
Remove remaining rusted and bent leg levelers, cut new foot blocks, glue and screw, new t-nuts and leg levelers, paint foot blocks
Glue and clamp bad lower right front corner
Remove coin door and disassmble
Remove Lock bar parts and fill holes with plugs
Bondo all holes and sand smooth
Zinsser oil-based primer and sand smooth
Match blue from CPO and apply 3 coats of Home Depot latex enamel (Base and color codes available on request)
Repaint all black areas with Rustoleum Satin Black
Wire-wheel all coin door parts and marquee bracket and repaint with Rustoleum Hammer-finish Black
Apply new smooth black T-molding
Re-assemble coin door and re-install
Re-install restore control panel
Cut new monitor bezel from black foamcore and mount
Apply NOS set of side art
New AC line cord and 3-prong plug

There is a lot of fiddly detail I'm leaving out, but that's the basic idea.

Glad I'm done, on to the next round of insanity.

And some more:

These show the final results of the areas that had all of those holes (WTF?)

and the damaged bottom right corner, now fixed.

Russ, absolutely gorgeous. What a supreme effort. I love that game, and I love that cab color. Turned out perfectly. Now you need a restored Lost Tomb to put next to your Scramble.

Thanks, Phet. It's hard to believe that's the same machine, isn't it?

I still don't know what the heck was up with all of those holes in the top of the right side panel. That is just whack.

Well, we'll have to work out a new deal in the Spring when the snow melts and I have money again. That Lost Tomb is a nice one.

Also, a lesson I almost learned the real hard way - when cleaning a painted surface for art application, usually the advice is to use 99% Isopropyl alcohol to de-grease the surface of fingerprints or oily residue to ensure adhesion of the new art.

The problem is (and I did not know this), you can't do this with latex-based enamel paint. The isopropyl alcohol will melt even fully cured latex paint. I almost ruined the nice finish on one side when I was prepping it for the side art install. The isopropyl starting cutting right into the paint. I was able to smooth it out but that was a close call. I almost fainted, I can tell you.

I am nowhere near the fine foam roller master you are, but I worked hard to get the finish nice and almost borked it up.

I hate working with Latex. Clean-up is easier, that's about it.

None of the hardware stores around here, Ace, Menard's, Home Depot, carry oil-based paints that can be color-matched. None.

What a crock.

Nice job Russ. I have another project in my garage tonight. I just obtained a Stern Seawitch pinball, needs some TLC for sure!

Thanks, Roadrunner.

The repro CPO is really of excellent quality - top notch.

Even though the side art pieces are 24 years old NOS, they have stuck surprising well.

I have a couple of tiny edge areas that are lifting by about a mm, but that's it. Color is vibrant.

Beautiful job, Russ! Bravo.

If anyone has a cabinet like this one (any condition) for sale in or near Florida, please PM me.

Thread Resurrection time. I'm in shock that this resto didn't get more responses or attention. I wish I had this game back it looks so nice. Russ you out there? Who has this game now?

Hey Phet - it went to Anthony Pietrack at QuarterArcade for a price so low I'd be embarrassed to admit it.

It really turned out very nice.

My hand is turned almost entirely to pinball now, although there are still friends I help out with arcade game repairs.

Your should see and play my shopped-out Doctor Who - sweeeeeet.

Yeah that thing is a work of art. I doubt they looked that good on day one. I don't usually get jealous but this one hurts! Killer game!
