Finally brought my Ghosts 'n Goblins back home I got in a trade. I knew it had this graphics problem going into it, but now that it's back home I can finally start to work on it. The person I got it from said it was playing fine and didn't have the problem before he moved it into his basement. The game plays fine, it just looks like extra horizontal lines going through the picture or that the picture is faded.

However, this problem isn't an issue for the game title, high score, player information (timer/score) or weapon box. Also, some parts of the ground are fine as well.

Anyone know what's up, or what could be up?

I've fixed a couple of these.

First arm yourself with the schematics, here: http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Arcade_Manuals_and_Schematics/Ghosts and Goblins Schematics.pdf

Start with the easy stuff first. Grab your logic probe and check the three 2148 color RAMs at 6D, 7D, and 8D on the A board. If the address and data lines to those look OK then check the 'LS367 buffers close by at 6C, 7C, and 8C. A fault in these chips is probably causing that persistent bluish color.

The background corruption could several things. Look at sheets 8 and 9 for the B board on the schematic and check the muxes and latches for stuck outputs. If everything looks OK then I'd suspect one of the scroll ROMs or the RAM at 7A.

Yeah, don't really have anything for testing or doing repairs on boards. I was figuring it's probably something with the rams or similar.

Warerat, up for fixing another one?

IMHO, hook up with a buddy with a burner and check sum your GHOST board roms.

I get the feeling that you have a bad rom (probably on the bottom board) just by looking at the screen.

It's interesting to note that all graphics is handled by the lower board, try disconnecting the ribbons and the game will still run, but with no graphics.

I was fixing a GnG some time ago, multiple issues but while fixing it the RED failed, it was a LS367 which solved it.
