Ghostkillers trek to Marvins Marvelous Mechanical Museum

Something Ive been meaning to do for a long time is you pay my respects and check out marvins museum in michigan. I hate driving long distances but the rewards are always fun. Gonna be roughly 800 miles which isnt the furthest ive driven by far but gonna be a trek and a fun journey. Gonna stop off in KY and Cincinatti to see some family and friends and probably hang out for a few days there then its onto michigan to vistit marvin and probably visit family out there as well. I know I got family everywhere, mainly just around Ky and michigan though. Anyway, I got my trusty droid and digi cam and Ill take plenty of pics of the journey and try and document my trip along the way, just figured I would share. If any Klovers want to meet up along the way for a beer or bite to eat post up and maybe we can arrange something. Gonna be leaving out monday morning. Anyone else been there?

Forgot to ask, anyone that knows of some cool landmarks or other odd shit to check out along the way from ga to michigan post up, Would be a fun diversion from a all highway trek.

I guess no interest eh? lol Oh well, Ill try and post some pics of the trip as I go, at the very least will give me something to do.

i was at Marvins Marvelous Mechanical Museum
a couple weeks ago, it was alot smaller than i was thinking it would be but still very cool.

You should stop in McLean IL on the way and visit the arcade museum.

Nice, gonna put that on my on the way list. :) Any recommendations on hotels in detroit? Not sure if I wanna take the 4 hour trip from cincinatti to detroit, visit marvin and drive back all in the same day but Im doing this road trip on a low funds basis. lol ALways makes trips more interesting when your kind of limited on funds.

Says its 5500 square foot building so thats not exactly very big but looks like he really does cram 10 lbs of shit in a 5lb bag like it says on his website. Was marvin there when you went?

Make sure and ask them to turn on the airplane parade. Walk around and read all the stuff up on the walls. I stop by every couple of months but doubt if it's worth a trip that far.

just stay away from the 7 mile and woodward area.

didn't see marvin. if your looking for playin games i'd go to golf and games around 14mile and van dyke. most of the games are beat on but still a cool place.a ton of vids, pins, pool tables, go karts, darts and a bar.

Yeah, That's why I haven't been yet but figured the closest Ill probably ever be to detroit will be visiting family around cincinatti so Whats another 4 hours to go check out marvin's, plus it may not be there too much longer so I gotta check it out. I cant think of anywhere else you could go to see some of the machines he has there. Now just need to find a few diversions along from ga to cincinatti to make the 8 hour trip go by faster but then that will turn it into a longer trip if I make stops. lol I'm betting on it being a let down so maybe I wont be disappointed. I'm sure there's other shit to do in detroit I can get into.

Marvin's is amazing. It isn't worth a trip from GA, IMO, but it is a great place. He does cram a LOT of stuff in there, and it is worth seeing. Some other places "on the way":

Pinball Pete's (ann arbor) - it is a little out of the way. I haven't been up there lately, but it is one of the few full stand alone arcades I know of around anymore. They have about 25-30 pins there - most of the best - MM, GnR, Adams family, Pirates, etc. They always get the new pins too.

There are a couple great laser tag places in Cinci/KY. Lazer Kraze is a nice place. If you go through toledo check out Q-zar. Not the greatest place on earth, but they have a good sized arena, and there is a Major Magics right next to it (it was pretty sad last time I went in there). If you are staying over - Mud Hen's stadium in toledo is super nice, and a day at the ballpark is worth the price (usually about $5-8 a ticket).

Yeah, I was gonna do a ball game but they will be away games I wanna say the week Ill be around unless I hang out for the weekend but not really a sports fan anymore. Im sure Ill get plenty of tips for cincinnatti and surrounding areas though from my family I havent seen in over 10 years. That Pinball Petes sounds interesting, If I keep adding things to the list on my way to marvins Ill have to stay over somewhere. Anyone care to let me sleep over? lol

Well early in the wee hours tomorrow morning Ill set off for my damn near 2000 mile round trip. ugh, hurts just thinking about it but Im stopping at every landmark and notable arcade on the way if I can and get some pics and memories under my belt. Stay tuned for some pics along the way and keep suggestion coming for places to visit off 75 from ga to cincinnatti and up through detroit! Gonna be long but fun.

i went there on a considerably shorter trip and was totally let down. no EM rifle or driving games, no classic pins or vids, just some interesting dioramas and a bunch of newer and mostly uninteresting to me fortune tellers etc. i did meet marvin but i dont think he was in a talking mood. after driving all night long i was bored and out of that place in a half hour.

i second the mclean suggestion, i was there for two days and feel like i couldve stayed a week. its amazing playing all those classics!

If I went to mclean for the arcade museum that would be a serious addition of time added to my trip to detroit and to see marvins. decisions decisions.

heres something i wrote right when i got back from MMMM:

"Amber had driven 3 hours out of our way to see this ridiculous place, sandwiched in the middle of a strip mall just outside 8 mile, Detroit. Eminem had his goddamn birthday party there. I have been talking about this place for years. It was not exactly what I had expected, nor what the internet had described. Marvin had assembled a monstrosity of old and new mechanical dioramas, and newer, stupider games. This was what I had expected, but I enjoyed watching an operating fortuneteller machine with heaving breasts, as well as a little box full of dancing Bimba monkeys and swaying palm trees, a whole song for a measly quarter. In addition, a mechanical guillotine, electric chair, Spanish Inquisition (flogging, the rack, and branding), a two-headed baby, and various nickelodeons, etc. A bunch of the machines said they were from the 1930s and shit. We met Marvin but he got pissed at me right away when I didn't answer some question he asked me. He told us to enjoy ourselves, and went back to his lifelong mission of strangeness."
