ghetto pacman

I guess Ill be the black sheep of the bunch and pay you a compliment. It looks good, actual arcade controls is a nice touch. Would have been easier to throw a 60-1 in there, but as long as you like it, job well done I say.
I agree. This was very creative and the end product looks great!

You know, it's funny. My buddy was just going to toss a gutted Sega cocktail into the arcade graveyard to be trashed last week, but he said I could have it if I wanted it. So I took it home, and was immediatley thinking, "how could I do something with it for super cheap, yet playable?"
I was going to do this EXACT thing. But in the end I scraped the idea for one main reason: those little PnP games won't do a screen 'flip'. So it really defeats the purpose and charm of having a cocktail table. The fun is having two people sit and shoot the shit while waiting turns. Its a bummer that emulators won't do it either. Needless to say, I'm looking for a 48-in-1 board. Anyone want to sell me one?

And Ponso, don't get discouraged for getting a little ragged on. KLOVers appreciate original arcade game charm and tend to frown down upon quirky conversions like this. I think you did a really great job of figuring out how to wire up 4 Pnps all to the arcade controls. To be able to switch between different games is pretty handy, I'm sure. Hope you enjoy playing all the fun titles for dirt cheap.

And for the people who don't know, the Pacman and Ms.Pacman Pnp's tend to run 4-12 classic games as well. Xevious, Galaga, Galaxian, Pole Position, Mappy, Bosconian, etc, etc. So for really cheap, he'll be able to play many classics.

Looks decent. If you did all that work to get a few plug n plays in there, you could have just put a decent pc in there and ran a zillion games in mame...
I save the Plug n Plays for the kiddiewinkies!

Yeah other than losing the instant boot time he has now, the cost of a pc and monitor, an ipac or similar and screwing with software that can be a nightmare at times... yep much easier.

Either way, looks great and good job thinking outside the box.

i threw this together for less than $40. plays 12 games.

Cabinet - trivia madness bought dead at arcade auction - $5
plexi - $6
PnP PacMan - $18
13" TV - $6.50 from Goodwill

But he has to flip a switch that's not on the cp to change games, the games are all horizontal and the Ms pac doesn't keep high scores.
My pc boots directly into mala in like 20 seconds and then I can choose whatever game I want from an almost infinite list with a joystick or spinner and return to the menu without ever touching a mouse/keyboard. The Jakks games actually need a few seconds to start up as well.
I never said mame was easy but hacking those tiny pcb's isn't that easy either.

I had one of those things with Ms. Pac, Galaga, Pole Position and Mappy. I believe I have played it twice in 5 years.

Thanks for all the opinions.

Thanks for all the opinions.

The main reason why I went ghetto was the cost factor and I already have the TV and PnP. Maybe one day I'll revisit this and throw in a mame or another 60n1 PnP.

nice job with the countertop devils1982.

Now on to my ghetto table top! haha. Will post back once done. Except this time it's not ghetto, promise.

You know, sometimes you just get the urge to build something and you gotta do it. I think we all understand that. There's no doubt you came up with a creative approach. It might fit in well on one of the "maker" web sites like the make blog. They appreciate creative ways to combine common items to come up with something new.

I went to a british car show a long time ago and some guy had shoved a big V8 into a Morris Minor. He had to sit in the back seat to drive it. It made absolutely no sense from a practical standpoint. But it was endlessly entertaining for those around watching. So is that a bad thing? I think not.
