But I really want to be able to play my Space Invaders Deluxe in the gameroom this winter. It was musty and has a bit of delamination on the bottom of the plywood, but otherwise the side art is very nice, I cleaned the monitor/ overlay/ backdrop/ light fixture bottom vinyl and coin box and installed a set of working boards in it. I need to install leg leveler blocks and the levelers themselves, maybe do a bit more scrubbing on the inside of the coin door, but aside from a full restoration this baby would be ready to light em up. I purchased the stencils to restore the cabinet, but realized that I could restencil it anytime, say when the paint actually began to peel off. What would you do? Get it good enough to put in there for now, or restore it fully and just wait a month (or more) to move it in and play it when it looks perfect? I am really getting tired of fully restoring these things given the little time I have these days. I still like to do it, but the time it takes sometimes seems not worth it when you just slap it in a row between 2 other games once your finished. I don't know, I suppose I am looking for justification in just saying "It looks fine for now".

Here's what it looks like now:

stick it between two other games and you are set! I decided so long as they look good from the head on its the easiest option. I'm having the same debate with my regular space invaders

That looks WAY better than my S.I. The way I look at it, I clean them up as best I can then I put them in the room. It's dark in there, Any resto I would do would just get lost. Besides, they're either next to a wall or next to each other so most of the art isn't seen at all.

Sometimes I have been known to touch up black paint is there is a big obvious mark in it on the front somewhere.

The most important part to me is that they work correctly, cosmetic is secondary.

YMMV,
Tom

Are you that embarrassed about what you paid for it that you had to scratch out/rip off the auction price? And oh yeah...looks just fine the way it is.

Hopefully you can figure out what to do with it. As it still looks good.

just restore the front and shove it between 2 games until your ready and have time to restore the sides

That's the best part. I can't restore the front. As far as I know, Rich's stencil kit is only for the sides. Even if I restored the sides, I'd have to either leave the front alone or try and touch it up, which rarely turns out right. That's another reason I kinda wanna justify waiting. I'd rather restore the thing as a whole.

Even an obsessed Phet Phan like me can see that game is plenty nice to be in the game room. Bring it in, and see if you can best my mindbogglingly high high score of roughly 3100.

/the gauntlet, she is thrown.

Use a magic eraser to get the scrapes and black paint off. I did this to my SID and it looks way better. If you really do a thorough job, you'll feel like you did a mini cosmetic restore and won't feel bad about waiting to restencil.

Have you seen a psychologist about your problem? That game looks amazing! :)

Bring it in and worry about restoring it later....when its not a burden. Hell, it looks better than my SI and you had fun playing that even though its a little beat up, right? Bring it in, take a break....

I'm calling it good for now....possibly ever.I'd take a break on restoring for a while, you don't want to totally burn yourself out.Besides,You need a game or two with some battle scars to add to that authentic arcade feel.

I don't think there are any white speckles. I dunno if it was a primer but mine has white underneath the red.
