getaway : high speed 2.......problems with ball eject

hello. last night i moved my getaway and turned it on to play it and its having a problem. as soon as you press start it tries to eject every ball in the ball trough. would this possibly be the switches under the playfield?..........or something else?
thanks
dave

Yeah try running the self test as it seems like the switch in the ball trough thinks a ball is there. I do know that when I got my machine the ball eject cam was bent up but worked. Put a new one in and it was jamming the switch so I had to tweak the cam. Make sure the cam isn't rubbing the switch.

Yep, sounds like it thinks thinks there is a ball jam in the trough. Check it in the switch edge test. With the trough filled correctly, the ball position switches should be open, but the trough jam switch should be closed. This is assuming that it has opto switches on the trough, if it has micros then the results will be the opposite in the switch test.

This sounds terrible... better sell it to me.

I think what's happening is an opto in the ball trough isn't working. The ball sees there is a ball there because the opto beam is not working, hence a broken beam, much like what a ball being there would do. And so, the game just keeps TRYING to eject that ball that is there... which it's not.

So, try that first.

No optos in the trough on Getaway, just normal switches.

Oh no kidding? What year was that made? 92? Optos had to have been just around the corner, no? Sorry for the stupid advice. :(

Yep, 92 and Getaway does have optos; just not in the ball trough. I guess they were in process as its a mix of optos and switches.

ok....i went to work on the machine tonite.......i lifted the playfield up and started a game and it shot the balls out like normal this time............hmmm....so i lowered the playfield down and played 5 games on this machine and everytime it worked as normal...?.......
i didnt see any optos but i didnt mess with it much after it seemed like it was working (for now)....it just looked like there was about 3 or 4 switches......

anyhow i have another question i cant seem to find an answer for.........
what does it mean when a playfield has a "diamond plate playfield"?
i notice in the pinball price guides it lists a diamond plate playfield on a bonzai run to be worth a little extra money.....i cannot tell if my bonzai has one?
however on this getaway i noticed in the outlanes where it drains the balls it says diamond plate playfield in black print
1. what is a diamond plate playfield?
2. did ALL getaways have diamond plate playfields?
3. will bonzai run have letters that say diamond plate right on the playfield in the same area as getaway?

thanks.....i never did understand what that meant

Diamondplate is a coating on the playfield to prevent wear. Williams started using it in the early 90's. So far as I know, 10 Banzai Run's were Diamondplate. Yours probably isn't, but pull the apron and see if XR-7 is written in magic marker under there. I believe all Getaways were Diamondplated. Mine is near flawless, whereas if it weren't coated it would probably be worn to hell by now.
