Get to Walgreens NOW!

Wow, I may actually have to pick one of those up!

I didn't read the whole thing - how much is it at Walgreens? Amazon has it for $25. This would be awesome for my nephew.

Important part:

Well, some of you might have already figured it out. You're probably wondering what format those games are in that you download? I'll give you a hint ... they are .BIN files. Now the smart person is thinking - hmmm... doesn't Sega Genesis emulators on the computer use .BIN files? You are correct. Finally, what would happen if you put Sega Genesis ROM files (in .BIN format) on the SD card ... would they work??

OMG ... they TOTALLY WORK!

That's right, boys .. What we have here is a Sega Genesis - complete with two wireless controllers AND you can play roms RIGHT OFF AN SD CARD!! And you can do it for $25 - on a piece of hardware you don't have to mail order from Hong Kong (and wait 6-12 weeks to get) - available at your corner drug store (Fry's Electronics carries them too .. but for $10 more). That's 250+ average sized Sega Genesis games on one card...

How is the emulation? DAMN GOOD. I took it for a spin with a wide varity of ROMs - different sizes, different publishers. I tested it out with: Altered Beast (Sega), Ms. Pac-Man (Tengen), Aladdin (Disney) and even took a mad fat ROM, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and tried THAT out. All worked ... I pretty much stood there with my mouth hanging open. Here was what we always wanted - an SD card based Genesis - and here it is for $25. No hacking, no soldering, no patching roms ... NOTHING ... works RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. I personally can't believe Sega let them do this. Piracy at Walgreens ...

There are a couple of caveats I noticed to using the SD card. First, it doesn't seem to like high capacity SD cards. When I used the 4GB card I had handy, it locked up the game after just a few moments of play. Changing to my Wii's 2GB standard SD card did the trick. Also, the list of SD card games are cached so the SD card is not parsed every time. The cache file is named _TEMP on the root of the card. If you add/remove/change any of the rom files in the GAME folder, delete that _TEMP file so it recaches it next time you boot the game system up.

I picked one up.

Like said before, $20 at walgreens. I'm not sure if I want to open it yet, though. I will wait to see if they go up in price at all on eBay... I would have bought two, because I do want to play one... but I didn't want an extra if they don't go up in value...

So just to be sure I understand, everyone is fine with this kind of piracy because they are selling a device that enables it at Walgreen's? I wouldn't want anyone to be confused and be a hypocrite this close to Santa finishing his list. ;) What is the difference between this and giving somebody a DS card with a loaded SD for Christmas?

Yeah.. I'm one of those guys who hates piracy... but I picked one up anyway. I'm the kind of guy with a modded PSP because I don't want to cary all my games around with me... and I'll do the same with this.

You sure you want to open up that can of worms for this thread, though?

I'm anti-piracy, but some could make the argument that DS carts are still being made and actively sold as a current platform while Genesis games are not.

So you're an anti-piracy advocate that is a pirate? lol awesome. sic' em nicfala!! SIC EM!

I am against piracy toward the games. I never put a game that I haven't legaly purchased on my memory stick to play. I buy the game, then I stick it on the memory stick. It's not illegal to make backups for yourself*... it's when you share them that it becomes against the law.

When I said I have a modded PSP so I don't have to carry games around with me and would probably do the same with this, it means that games I own will go on this, so the carts can sit safely on the shelf or in a box...

I figured I could get some crap for posting that... oh well. Now, if you want to chastise me for anything, technically the act of modding is illegal, because of the patents on the system, and copyrights on the firmware.

This is absolutely fantastic. My nephew is going to freak. And yeah, I might pick one up for myself for only $20. Damn thing would be a lot less trouble than dragging out the Genesis. I gotta admit that I'm also interested in the handheld version, though I know I'd never use it.

Now someone get 32X roms to work on it, please.

Just went to pick one up. They were marked $30 on the shelf so I only ended up getting one. It rang up as $20, though. I would have gone back but a line had formed behind me and Walgreens can be freaking SLOW sometimes so I decided against it. I'll probably stop by on my way home tomorrow.
