Finally getting around to throwing in a much needed cap kit to the old K4900. Brings me to thoughts of how to crack this nut. The cabinet itself is very sturdy and strong, however cosmetically it's got it's problems.
The left side is missing the sideart entirely.
See www.zinfer.com/gauntlet2.htm for more rubust details.
The front of the cabinet has various splotches of spray paint and the bottom has some peeled off material.
The simplest way to fix this would be to remove the old laminate and recover it. But I don't think anyone's found a good material for recovering cabinets.
Which brings me to stripping down the entire cabinet, shooting it with primer and paint.
I'm pretty sure there's still just one option. But just thought I'd throw it out there and ask if anyone's tried to just re-laminate a cabinet with a black material.

As for recovering the cabinet, I have been wondering the same thing myself.

I've got a cab that was converted to Crime Fighters that i'm converting back to Gauntlet, and I'll need to strip it and start fresh. I'll probably do vinyl or paint myself. Look forward to seeing how you tackle yours.

Well I just got the cap kit in. Considering how to fix the cosmetics of the cabinet. I honestly haven't gotten around to the boards yet. I think everything on both boards has a problem with the slapstick security chip.

I wonder if your eprom problem was due to using a different speed Eprom or a different maunfacturer eprom.

Just a thought.

So where do you buy it?

ThisOldGame sells the black vinyl. Home Depot, Lowes, or there's a guy on Ebay who sells Formica or Wilsonart matte black vinyl. You can actually go to the cabinet/countertop order desk in HD or Lowes and order a sheet. You probably want vinyl for the sides, and can vinyl the cabinet front, but laminate looks good on the front too.

I've tried going to Lowes about this, but I don't feel like cutting new wood for the front and side panels. I think Rich might have the solution. Threw some of that in my cart. I'll try it first on the Donkey Kong and see how it works out.
Thanks

The black vinyl on rich's site is 36" wide, and I believe when I measured my cabinet the other day, it is bigger than that at the widest point. :(

I was thinking the same thing. My Gauntlet project is in storage right now, but I was pretty sure it was deeper then 36". It is a big, heavy S.O.B.

yes I measured it a while back and it is indeed larger than the material offered by Rich. So there would be a line between the covering where the two meet. I was thinking if you went down the middle with the seam and under the sideart it may be less noticeable.
