I just picked up a Gauntlet Legends in excellent shape outside of some issues with the monitor. I did some searching and have some ideas as to what might be wrong, but I'd like to get some specific input on the combination of issues I'm seeing.

1. The picture seems to need time to "warm up" to attain full brightness and contrast. This is the first machine (of the 6 I have) that needs this, though my other games are all older. Is this normal? Specific to newer games? Can someone explain what causes this?

2. The picture is hourglass shaped, meaning it comes inward at the edges at the vertical center of the machine. No amount of adjusting takes this away, though it does seem to get better after the warm-up period.

3. I seem to have to keep readjusting the focus, which is a particular pain, as this adjustment is on the chassis and not remote. It seems the focus is either good with the monitor cold or warm, but not both.

4. The colors in test mode all check out (R,G,B), but in general the picture seems sort of green or washed out.

5. Finally, the power supply on this thing is LOUD and clanky. I'm not sure whether this is normal or a potential source of some of my problems.

Given these issues, what are your thoughts as to how to best correct them? I've heard something about a serial out connection on the PCB (I've not actually looked closely at it) - is this a case for a computer monitor? Is this a common swap?

All thoughts are welcome and appreciated.

You probably have a K7500 monitor in it. You might take some pictures of the chassis (the monitor boards) and post them here. Take a picture of the tube number too.

2. This is called pincushion and you're probably missing a small transistor that goes on a little card off the main chassis.

3. The flyback is bad and needs to be replaced.

4. You probably need to have the electrolytic caps replaced. PM Modessitt here, he can help you.

5. Power supply shouldn't be loud. Is the fan operating normally? Have you checked the voltages with a multimeter to see if they're ok?

Post those pics and people can offer concrete advice.

Thanks for the reply - your thoughts are in line with what I've been reading. It is indeed a WG K7500. I guess I was just a little suprised / disappointed that both the flyback and the caps are bad/going. I suppose neither issue bothered the previous owner enough to replace parts. There are a few guys up this way that can do the job - I will seek them out.

I will also take and post some pics (and check PS voltages) shortly.

+1 with everything stated above. Don't feel too down about both the flyback and caps being needed. A rebuilt K7500 can be reliable for a long time with this little work of doing the job. I consider it one of the more solid med-res monitors and easier to work on when things break.
