Gauntlet Legends error - thought was video card but that's wrong - help!!

Thought i had a video card problem in this Gauntlet Legends I had picked up since the LCD on board cycled to 8 and flashed 3 times before cycling -. I bought a new replacement card and im still getting the booting tone but it only gets to here on the screen

No valid home blocks found. qid error---edf on file

I have tried to research this but been unsuccessful. I bought this game last week and owners were just suddenly getting this message after about 5 hours of play. I wasn't able to reproduce the message while i was there so i bought the cabinet off them and figured it was a video card swap.

They gave me 4 HDD and the few i tested through the test menu seemed to test fine however one was a dark legacy (doesnt match the roms on board), and the other 3 dont mention the version type. Version type of the rom is 1.4

THanks for the help!
Steve

That would be a hard drive or hard drive image issue.

The fact that you're seeing any messages at all on the monitor means it's not the video card.

Easily enough fixed.

If your drive itself is good but the image is bad, you just need to find someone here with the proper image that matches your roms and get a CHDMAN dump of their drive and you're back to working.

Thanks for the help guys but the weird thing is I know the hard drive can be corrupt but they purchased 2 off ebay. Out of those 2 from the sellers, i would expect them to have received the right version for their game and if not the 2 i researched on ebay offered a guarantee.

I guess it's time to hunt the right version down or just upgrade my machine to legacy! :D

Anyone want to buy a video card! j/k

If i DL the mame CHD for Legends that's version 1.2 would that work for this setup or is it the other way around?

I'm too lazy to take my cage off to say for sure, but one of the cable connectors has nothing hooked up to it?

BTW, save that video card, you'll quite possibly need it in the future. The hard drives and video cards seem to be the Achilles heel's of this game and a few years from now when that video card is less easy to replace you'll be glad you have it.

Ok well im having monitor brightness issues as well as some control issues..ugh.

Anyways the problem that i overlooked and caught on these pictures is that that red line on the ribbon cable is on 40 and not pin 1. i just flipped the cable and whalla as i was plugging it in wrong! now 3 of my 4 hard drives work no problem. The HDD that doesnt work is a dark legacy one so that's expected!

Anyone have a picture of how the bottom side of a CP looks. Seems the chucklehead who tried to fix the machine took it upon himself to rewire the controls. I cant enter my initials as it just goes straight to character select

It's a good thing 3 techs looked at that thing. :p

hopefully you get it going soon. The manual may have the schematic for cp wiring in it.

I have pics but unfortunately for you they were taken AFTER I'd taken out the 49-way optical sticks and replaced them with 8 ways (and that required new CP wiring harnesses among other things).

The manual DOES have complete wiring tables so it should answer any questions you've got.

Do you have an original GL game using 49 way optical sticks or a conversion kit board that uses 8 ways?

Oh -- one other suggestion.

You have a working hard drive so now would be a good time to use CHDMAN and take an image of it for use after your hard drive crashes. :)

Although it sounds like you've got spares so you'd be in better shape than most.

Yea i have 3 working :D and one dark legacy. Bizarre thing is i have a dark legacy marquee??? Oh well im not complaining as it's a fine machine.

Control scheme is pretty weird. All original harness w/ 49 sticks. Since it's on freeplay i would hit start for my character and it would say "enter initials but then go right to character select screen. I would have no problems selecting stage but once game started my player would auto fire their weapon and i would move in spurts. Well i messed with the button wiring and moved the molex connectors around to where i thought they should be and whalla..firing as they should when i hit the button but i still can't put my initials in??? Initials taken out of free play maybe?

I do have the manual both digital and hard copy but im in such a hurry sometimes i would rather ask the question then look it up since the manual isnt that good of a troubleshooter. Figured since the original harness is in it, it should have the correct wiring.

ill definately be backing up my HDD and is it worth the $$ for the upgrade?

Ironically i had a guy call me today fishing around if i had the machine for sale. He knew where i got it and that it had issues. He said his friend tried to fix it but couldnt. Since the dude was kinda nosey i said yea i got it fixed and told him the simple problem. Threw it in his face i bought it off the people broken for $100 *although that's a stretch* LOL

I can't imagine it would skip the initials in freeplay mode. You can always throw the dip switch to take it out of free play mode and check but I think that's a longshot. My guess is you're still getting one of the wires grounded inappropriately and it's taking you past the initial entering stage.

What you should do is go to the diags screen and the controls test and it will show you every control and what's active and you should methodically test them for each player until you know they're right.

The guide has a very helpful chart showing where every wire should be going.

Is it worth the dollars for the upgrade to what?
