I have a Gauntlet Legends/Dark Legacy Conversion Arcade game that all of a sudden would not boot up. The PCBs light up and all power voltages are correct. I have done all the troubleshooting I could with no results. I have the manual too. The LED that is supposed to go through the start sequence only shows a "8". According to the manual the leds are saying it is locked up. I even have a second "working" entire PCB set I got from ebay that does the exact same thing. I have tried swaping extra hard drives with no results. The screen shows nothing, and you can not hear the hard drive spin. Any suggestions on what is wrong with it? I really could use some help.
Thanks you.

I have owned this game last year. Have you tried putting it in test mode? Cant remember how to fo it unfortunatley. Most issues I see with these games are defective hard drives. Are you certain the hard drive cable is good? Check that all chips are seated properly too

I'm supposed to go look at one of these tomorrow that keeps rebooting during game play. I've already verified the PS works, but don't know what voltage range it likes to run at for optimum performance.

Supposedly it has a new hard drive, too, but we'll see when I get there...

I have tried to put in it test mode by using the service switches that are behind the coin doors - nothing happens. All I get is power to the pcbs. If I disconnect the ribbon cable to the hard drive, leave the power cable hooked up then I can hear the hard drive spin. After I put back the ribbon cable - nothing else happens. I have tried converting it back to Gauntlet Legends and it does the same thing. I have tried spare hard drives - no difference. Even my entire spare Gauntlet Legends PCB, from Ebay, does the exact same thing. The LED that is supposed to change numbers as it boots up only shows a constant "8". Please any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated. I am going crazy from this machine. I have also checked for stuck buttons - which had happened to me before. But when there was a stuck button - it would still boot up and then get stuck.

Have you verifed the voltage from your power supply? If you have tried 2 board sets and hard drive this may be your issue. Not enough voltage to the board or drive will cause your issues. You can use a meter to test this,. Also try disconnecting power and the ribbon cable to the hard drive. What happens?

All hard drives to my recollection use 5v. You can always use a meter and turn the little knob on the supply to adjust the voltage accordingly

I have attached a link that will help both of you guys out- print it out !

Those Vegas sets can get flaky:

-Set the PS to 5.2 from the supply. Measure to see if you're getting around 5.15ish at the board.
-reseat all socketed chis on all boards
-reseat all interconnected boards
-replace HD ribbon cable with different/new one
-replace HD

Thanks, but you're a day late and a dollar short....

So what was the problem?

Dunno if I fixed it or not. It was constantly rebooting. Ran it through the disc tests, and verified the PS was good. Finally pulled the CPU, reseated the socketed chips, verified the fans were working, redid all the connectors....and it stopped rebooting. We'll see if it lasts. Monitor has a really bad pincushion effect, but they've got the width adjusted out so they barely notice it. Maybe they'll have me fix it....

I have gone through it and reseated everything. I did check the voltages which were 5 volts. I will try to adjust it to 5.2 and see if it needed just a little more juice. I will work on it Friday and let you know the results. Thanks for the input.

Okay, I tried adjusting the voltages for the 5 volts and 12 volts. I took it to 5.2 volts and 12.6 volts and nothing changed. Still the same problem. I put in the extra Gauntlet Legends board with the higher voltages, and still no help. Both boards just get power (leds light up) but do not boot up. Please any other suggestions? I really would like to get this thing working.

Check that you have the Hard drive cable connected properly, It's easy to get them on upside down. The hard drives don't spin up when you get them on backwards.

Also try booting the game without the hard drive connected, obviously it won't boot but it will keep trying and you wll be able to see the constant reseting on the board's LED.

I used the hard drive from my original Gauntlet Legends pcb that I had converted to Gauntlet Dark Legacy and put it into my spare Gauntlet Legends pcb. With this hard drive it will spool up and keep running, but the pcb does not load. Actually it still does the same thing as the other one. The #2 LED just shows a "8" when it should be showing "-" while loading. The screen does not show anything either. I then also swapped out the eproms (boot eprom, sound eprom, video eprom) still no help.
