I have a good friend that owns a boardgame/minatures/CCG store and has had a Gauntlet Legends for some time now. The game no longer gets much play and the monitor needs some work. He recently put my Street Fighter II cab in the store and it has done pretty well. He would eventually like to get some more classic type games in there, mainly early 90's stuff as the early 80's stuff is covered pretty well by the local classic arcade.

Anyways, he was interested in putting one of the older 4 player Jamma+ games in the Gauntlet cabinet to get some use out of it. He doesn't plan to change any of the graphics, just have a different PCB in there to get some play. TMNT, XMen, Simpsons, etc.

I told him that it wouldn't be a straight PCB swap as the optical sticks would have to be switched out and I didn't think the Medium res monitor in the Gauntlet would work with the older TMNT and the like.

Am I correct on that? The Gauntlet Legends/Dark Legacy conversion (which his is) don't seem to bring a whole lot and I haven't had any interest in selling it here.

Any ideas, opinions?

You're correct -- you have two obstacles:

1) Optical sticks will need to be swapped out with mechanical ones (not a big deal). I think Paradise Arcade has Eurostick ILs on sale for $10 now and they're very good sticks.

2) Monitor is likely a medium res only

If you can find a game to put in there that will do medium res then it may be worth doing. Otherwise 25" monitors aren't that hard to come by. Game really takes a 27" but you can put a 25" in there with a new monitor bezel.

In my GL cab I have Gauntlet Dark Legacy, NBA Jam, and SMASH TV currently and it works well for all of these.

Ok, that is what I figured. I might see if I can't get his monitor fixed and maybe we can get it sold and replace it with another 4 player cab.

OK, you might confirm what monitor is in his cab -- if it'll do medium and standard res then you're in good shape.

Will do. We are going to crack it open in the next week or two and look at it. His employees have misplaced the keys so we will have to drill out the locks.
