Anyone gone the CF (compact flash) route on a GL?
I have one with an HDD(hard disk drive)that may be acting up and was considering CF. I was just curious how much GL hits the 'disk' as that could shorten the life of CF solution and if anyone has done this/how it performed, etc?

I've done it.

It works but it's somewhat picky about the cf brand/type that you use.

Performance seems to be about the same; only real negative is that it will give you a boot-time error message when you first turn the game on/reset it. Once it resets from that all is well.

Not sure how long the longevity is; I did it, showed that it worked, and then went back to my hard drive because I had no issues with it.

Now I have a GDL image on the CF card in preparation for my one day conversion from GL to GDL.

One thing that I would highly recommend is to pull your hard drive and take a snapshot of it RIGHT NOW with chdman. If your hard drive hasn't lost any data at this point then capture the data on it; you'll save yourself a lot of potential drama down the road.

Great info. Thanks. If you don't mind, what CF media, etc., worked for you?

My machine had an error something like:
"Cannot find stable memory on disk"

I didn't see it - was reported to me after machine was reset and started working again. Going to watch it but that made me think going the CF route might be a good idea.

Paul,

I'll dig it out tonight.

I do remember that I went with a much larger CF card than I really needed for GL because the image size for GDL is much larger and I wanted to just buy one. (GDL conversion in my future).

Regardless of the CF or not, I'd definitely get an image of that hard drive ASAP using chdman.

Thanks. I will get an image of the drive as well.

Kingston 16gb

Some brands definitely do not work (sandisk being one of them).

16gb should be fine for GDL; I can't remember whether you need a 4 or 8 for GL.

Paul,

Believe it or not I just found the package for the CF card.

It's a Kingston 16gb 133x elite pro.

I've tested it with GL and it works fine (with the exception of resetting every first time through the game's boot up).

I've not tested it with GDL but it is big enough for it.

I bought one of these (yesterday):

Kingston Ultimate 16 GB 266x CompactFlash Memory Card CF/16GB-U2.

Will see how it plays.

Appreciate the info.

I just tried an 8GB Transcend 133x for my Dark Legacy, and it just gets in a reboot loop with 'HDIO Error, device timeout on hard disk'. I then dug out an 80GB HD and put the same MAME image on it and it boots fine.

I'd say stay away from Transcend brand. Now I've got a 4 and 8GB card that I don't have any use for.

I'd appreciate it if anybody else who has successfully done it would post what brand and model they used for future reference. In a previous Legends cab I had good luck with an Adata 4Gb.

Same here, HDIO disk test errors with war final assault and a transcend 8GB card. Thanks for pointers about the kingston card.

Old thread. :)

And yeah, ToplessZ is correct -- I have GDL working flawlessly on the exact CF he mentioned here. Had multiple reports of failure on other Sandisk cards so make sure you get this one.
