Where is the battery on Gauntlet Legends? I was assuming the main pcb...but I can't find the damn thing anywhere! The manual is no help.

There isn't a battery.

The game has a hard drive -- there's no reason for it to have a battery...

There is a small black rectangular Lithium battery on the same board as the jamma connector. Its hard wired into the board though and never seen anywhere where to get a replacement or replace it. Let me know if you find details anywhere where to get it or how to replace it.

From the G DL manual:

Battery
Switch off AC power. Unlock and remove rear door. Remove perforated metal cover. Battery is mounted
on top of integrated circuit at Sound I/O Board Assembly location U28. Use chip extraction tool to grasp
battery edges and pull up firmly to remove device. Set aside with pins facing up. When installing new battery,
align key with slot in integrated circuit.

Still not sure where to buy these though unfortunately.

Thanks for that info. I'm guessing it is 3vdc? Probably going to have to adapt another battery to work.....
I hope to check it out closer tonight.

Found it:

STMicroelectronics M4T28-BR12SH1

Product: http://mouser.com/ProductDetail/STM...GAEpiMZZMsfD%2bbMpEGFJdvZIb1XjvigkwEEwxUZByA=

Data Sheet: http://www.st.com/stonline/books/pdf/docs/13125.pdf

It looks like it keeps time and provides battery backup for the time all within the chip so you'll need to replace with the above I would imagine.

It says it just pulls up and out of the socket. Let me know what happens when you try just pull yours off as I have one I need to do eventually as well.

Hope this helps.

I officially eat my words. That battery is in an odd package -- never seen one quite like that before.

Had to replace mine. It was about $10 including shipping. It is socketed, not soldered. If your volume setting cannot be saved then your battery probably needs replacing.

Wow -- that's wild.

I wonder why all that stuff isn't saved off to the hard drive? I wonder what in the game requires clock information that can't be saved off to the hd?

Maybe the underlying OS requires it?

The clock has to keep running when the game is turned off, therefore it needs a constant power supply. Once you've got battery backed stuff like that, designers tend to use it for other things (like volume, apparently, in this case) just because it's there.

But why would the clock have to keep running with the game off? Is this a requirement of the underlying OS?

Was having issues wtih Gauntlet Legends coming up at real loud volumes and losing its coin setting information. Replaced the lithium battery and now the volume and coin settings are saved again. Thanks for the info!

STMicroelectronics M4T28-BR12SH1 is what was in mine and replaced with the same.

Ever pulled the battery out of an old wall clock? Notice the second hand stopped moving? Computer / arcade RTCs are the same way -- they need to keep ticking, 24/7, to be right.

Hello,

I am new to the forum and new to owning vintage arcade games in general.
I just recently bought Gauntlet legends for my home.
And I have just noticed that I need to replace the battery aswell.

My Question is:
If I don't replace the battery right away, will it damege the game?

I ran mine with a bad battery for a month and had no issues. I just had to adjust the volume every time because it defaults to such a loud level.
