Yes, I know, Gauntlet / Gauntlet II uses a 68010 CPU, but will it work without any problems with a 68000 ? I have one here that seems fine 68000, but am curious if I'm likely to encounter any problems using that CPU.

If it's okay with a 68000 then why did Atari use a 68010 ?

I remember looking into this a while back and finding that the 68010 has a set of instructions that are a super set of what the 68000 instructions. They should function equivalently on a board if the program is not calling any of the extra instructions.

My limited snooping left me with the impression that the swap was ok to do. Maybe Atari got a deal on a batch of 010 chips, wanted the versatility, needed them for another application, were planning on using the extra capabilities in the future, etc...

Yeah, I remember reading about the differences in the two CPUs, was just curious if the Gauntlet or Gauntlet II program code utilised the different instructions at all.
