Game crapped out on location, no video.

At shop now, monitor is good, power supply tests OK, the 7 seg. LED counts down a few times then flashes "u" and "E" a few times, then reboots. Never does show anything on the screen.

Not sure where to go from here, other than start eliminating with a known-good board set, which I do not have.

I should know better... pays to search FIRST.

"If it cycles through the numbers and ends up after the 8 displaying a U E that means a bad video card."

The number is the key. Chad here at MonitorBoss has the video cards too.

That quote looks familiar. :)

those video cards outright die? has anyone ever tried working on them before? like reapplying thermal paste or something?

Never heard of anyone attempting to fix them but they drop dead like flies. Those and hard drives seem to be the most common failures in that game.

Seems to be heat related failures as having fans die inevitably leads to those cards failing.

yeah, I may have mentioned in a few Vegas threads now to always check that your fans are working cause I had 2 or 3 die myself. I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the video card one was dead. I wound up replacing most of mine with some ones I got through Happ. if you wanna get industrial and crazy (like I did with the video card fan) you can always drop in those high output Sunons from newegg.

the other common "failure" is the JAMMA fingers for the +5 getting toasted. I had to replace the JAMMA board on mine cause I had too much of power loss on the original board that was fried, the game would reset constantly. I've poured more money into it than I ever really wanted, but at least I have it in a location on the floor at work that it's getting play now.

I suppose since you're the resident Vegas guru, is there any advantage to running them with the cage on or off? does leaving it off actually hamper the airflow or is it better because of the ventilation? I think the entire time I've run my Sportstation in a Blitz cab I've had the cage off.

I'm not a resident guru, I've just fought mine until I was ready to scream. :)

Yeah, been through one video card and now have 2 spares on hand.

If I have more issues with that Jamma power connector I'll probably try the same trick that someone else (Arcrevival?) was using on another system to supplement the +5v feed -- solder a wire from the +5 to just beyond the +5 finger on the board to provide an additional +5 path. Not pretty but it should help.

I suspect the cage is there because of FCC regulations regarding interference so I'm not convinced it matters much unless that's a concern in your environment. I wouldn't think leaving it off would hamper the airflow...

Guy on eBay is selling the video cards NEW for $50! I suggest grabbing one if you own either a Legend or DL as a spare, as they are rare.

Also with the power fingers burning on the JAMMA - mine starting doing that, and what I did was remove the power cable that goes from the Vegas board to the hard drive. Now I connected a power cable from the power supply TO that connector on the Vegas board, which ALSO jumpers through to the hard drive. I can post a picture if that helps. Basically I have offloaded the +5 and +12 from the JAMMA connector to that hard drive power connector. Now there is little or no current flow throught the JAMMA connector. I should in theory cut those power wires from the JAMMA.

I dont think you should be supplying 2 spots with the same power feed, so you should chop the jamma wires. I generally try a last ditch of scraping the fingers... Had one on an MK2 board that was pitch black thinking it was burned off... I restored it back very nicely.

You also might not be entirely screwed with the jamma edge unless the fingers are lifting. Dont ever apply solder to it though, thatll only make it worse on a Vegas cause you have nowhere to attach the solder to.

Well I received a nice shiny new video card today and installed it.
I now have video, however it is showing an error on bootup:
"Audio System Init Timed Out" then it does a watchdog reboot and does it all over again.

I double checked all voltages, and I am able to get into the menu by pressing the test button on attempted bootup. Ran out of time today to check anything else.

Anyone else come across this? Should I be on the hunt for a sound/IO board now?

Not to cause thread necro, but I'm having the same issue. Anyone ever figure this out? I have replaced the video card (I own three now) and the entire boardset. The new boardset at least boots fully, but all it does is give the audio system init timed out! error and reboot quickly. I've replaced the hard drive, every board in it, and the voltages all check out, so I'm pretty sure it's not the power supply, especially since the new boardset is giving a completely different error. I even tried swapping the audio chip from my earlier board, but still no good. I'm afraid I'm going to have to send back this entire boardset, as well as the 50$ video card mentioned in this thread. All it does is display garbage, and lined out graphics on the two times I actually got it to boot. Le sigh.

w00t! I did the unthinkable and unseated the audio rom while the unit was powered up on the old board, then plugged it back in hot and voilla; audio problem resolved! That audio rom now also works on the new board. As many times as I seated and unseated that audio rom and the other, you'd think the contacts would have been cleaned, but I guess not.

Now, we're booting up just fine, audio is checking out but the controls have stopped functioning??? When I press start, all that happens is that the game buzzes at me? I'm sure this one is going to be an easy fix, but I've configured the game for free-play for testing, ran all the control tests and everything works. I can even navigate through the menu's just fine, but as soon as the game boots fully, the controls cease to function.

Anyone ever hear of that?

I know you set it to free play but heard it will do that if you don't put a credit on in regards to the buzz sound... Hopefully that helps you but I don't have one yet so cannot comment on my own just yet.

You were correct, but it was an unfortunate combo for me. It was, in fact on coin op mode which does produce the sound! However, it turns out that the battery on the board was hosed, so it wasn't saving my settings. Whenever I reset the game with free play on, without the battery, the settings were lost, and I couldn't change them basically. Luckily for me, I remembered that I had a couple of untested coin-mechs inside of that Silver Strike 2009 bowling cabinet, and popped them into Gauntlet. The first one needed a little work on the lever, but I got em both in, and they're working great. So, cabinet is now 100% operational!

Additionally, while cleaning the cabinet, I found about 5$ in quarters, as well as some receipts from 1998 detailing the machine's weekly payouts for a period over the summer in '98 AND the big prize; an entire Dark Legacy upgrade graphics kit safely wrapped in a tube! Cabinet began its life as a Legends conversion, so it still has a near mint Legends panel overlay and artwork, but the monitor bezel is much appreciated, and now I've got two extra marquee's (ordered one when I first got machine).

The machine has taken in 177894 quarters in it's lifetime according to the counter, which boils down to: 44473.50 !!! It was making an average of 194$ a day at it's original location in El Chico Texas during the period the receipts covered! Probably TMI, but I found those receipts interesting as all get out. Got to see the payouts on several machines, what the ticket value was compared to the prizes etc. (.0045 for the record, with an average ticket payout ratio of 24%) Some of the machines were "hot" with payouts set to 80% for those that have ever had a sneaking suspicion that some machines are paying out more than others.
