Gauntlet Dark Legacy Does Not Boot Up.

> When you swap out GDL on a GL board set, do you just need the boot ROM chip (U18), the PIC chip (U37), and the correct GDL hard drive with same version to make the swap?

Yes

Cool. That's what I figured.

I think these sets have something like the "Dallas Realtime Clock", it's more or less permanently mounted on the I/O board and says "TimeKeeper" on it and is lithium. There's even an option in the setup that lets you set the time and date on the "RTC". It looks like a little black rectangular box.

Also, not to hijack the thread, but this is my first post and I read some year-old threads on here involving you demogo where you were trying to get 8-way sticks and the buttons working with a GL or GDL set. Did you ever get it to work?

If not (and this may not be what you were trying to do at all) did you know that switch 4 on U12, if set to OFF, would get your player's 3 buttons to function correctly on a normal JAMMA harness? I just tested a GDL set in my Mortal Kombat 1 cabinet with the 8-way stick setting, standard-res setting, and with this switch 4 set to OFF to get the buttons to finally work. Just thought I'd ask you about this.

I also did a short series of vids on YouTube experimenting with PC video cards to find one able to replace the Obsidians that go with these sets. I found one, just search YouTube for "Gauntlet Legends Video Card Substitutions". (if you didn't already know about these)

Cheers!

BTW: How DO you tell a converted GL set from a factory GDL set???

Can you please tell me how to reset the "timekeeper"? I am trying to figure out why my 2 PCB boards are stuck on -8. I have tried two of my stuck PCBs with a second GL wiring harness and power supply and they both showed -8 stuck on the cycling LED. Second wiring harness and power supply did not help.

I don't think you CAN RESET it man. It either has a lithium battery inside (most likely) or uses power from a type of capacitor to keep time and has a crystal inside for accuracy.

Don't know what happens when the lithium battery dies. Guess you lose time when the machine is unplugged. You can set the time on it through the menus, but it sounds like you can't get far enough to even get a display.

I think everyone keeps saying an "8" means a bad video card, but none of us have been able to find a good list of the meaning of those numbers during the boot sequence.

Sorry I can't help more.

I would dismantle the entire set and clean all the contacts on the connections where they all connect together with a pencil eraser. Use one that doesn't keep getting all gummy and black if possible.

Then firmly reconnect all the parts and see if anything changes. Hope you make some headway on this!

Post some pictures of your boards here.

I don't think that's the issue but you never know.

Okay, I was finally able to take pictures, I hope this helps. It is of the 3 PCBs. Regarding the 8., I installed a new video card I got from this forum. It still shows 8. on two of the PCBs with the new video card installed. Please let me know if you spot anything, I have not seen. In the 1st pic one is of a pcb in the machine, the other two are using my extra GL harness and power supply.

While you've got the system open; take a well lit directly overhead picture of each board that fills the frame.

There's not enough resolution/clarity in the pics you posted above to tell me anything.

Everything in your board sets looks peachy to me man. I looked pretty closely. Since I can't see your jumpers REALLY well, you might double check them, but I think they are all set like mine. I couldn't, however, see your DIP switch settings at all at that detail level.

On an interesting side-note, look here:

http://www.thedodgegarage.com/3dfx/q3d_arcade.htm

This fellow runs a site listing tons of info on 3DFX hardware that has been in arcade machines. He lists GL/GDL and has pics of the board sets, but what is REALLY interesting to me is the pics of the Midway Durango board sets that look practically identical to Vegas 777 sets. If someone got hold of these instead of a Vegas set or even just ONE of the boards (since the IO board appears to be the only one screen-printed with Vegas 777 on it), then how would you know, and would they work like a Vegas 777 set or give errors? Hmmm.

Hey! Just found a page with TONS of info on differences in the Vegas 777 and Durango sets! Seems Gauntlet Dark Legacy (dedicated set) was originally on a Durango set! And there are several ways to distinguish the sets. It lists a bunch.

It's mainly about emulation with Mame, but has a LOT of info on these board sets! Go here:

http://mamedev.org/source/src/mame/drivers/vegas.c.html

Cheers guys!

Okay, I have taken more pictures. I hope these are better. I was able to get the PCB that worked once recently to cycle up but then get stuck on "C". Not sure what that one means either. But if I keep cycling power to it - it will get stuck on the infamous "8." Does not do cycle up or anything.

Your last pic was pretty good... others were blurry. On the board set that has switch #5, 6, and 8 on U12 ON, try setting 6 and 8 to OFF and see if it boots. If not, then leave those 2 OFF still and flip #5 OFF too and try to boot. I am pretty sure #6 and 8 should be OFF but #5 depends on the Revision. Good luck!

Sorry the pics must be blurry. All the dip switches are set per the manual. 5, 6, 7, 8, are all set to off. Do you know what "C" means?

Don't know what "C" means.

Oh ok. You've got 1, 3, & 4 set to "ON". So, Med. Res, 49-way sticks, and a Midway Cab and Harness.

I can't see your darn switches well enough, lol. Didn't realize your numbers are upside down and actually start with switch 8 on farthest left position (only have my charts here and a digital pic from the setup menus to look at), so I am not looking at my board set. I was counting from "1" on the far left to "8" on the far right.

Argh... still boggling me. :)

Unfortunately I can not get this thing going. I have three PCBs, two power supplies, two wiring harnesses, two control panels, and multiple hard drives. I really hope someone figures out what "8." means. In my system(s), it must not be caused by the video board, since I have a new one installed. If anyone has a guess, please let me know.

I know this is an old thread but I was wondering if anyone figured out a solution for this problem. Apparently I'm having the same issue.

Sorry, haven't messed with my Vegas 777 boards in quite a while, but did get some replacement SnapHat batteries in (TimeKeeper Modules) to replace the ones on these board sets. If you need a link to where I ordered them from, reply to this message.
