Gauntlet Dark Legacy Does Not Boot Up.

Oh, I see. You were testing with another LCD monitor rather than the regular monitor.

Start with the system that you get the ping sound from when you turn it on -- that system is past the hw checks and is booting. It's happy with the HD and video card at that point.

As gamefixer said, make sure your video cable is connected and is working correctly.

And on the system above that pings, if you wait a couple of minutes do you get the attract mode sounds? If you do, I'd really be suspicious of your video cable or perhaps your monitor.

FWIW, that video card COULD be tested in a PC. Depends on whats wrong with it though. If its got internal shorts I wouldn't put it in a PC. You'll need to download 3DFX drivers and some old benchmark to see if it works though. You'll probably also need to test it on a Win98 or XP box. I dont know if Vista or Win7 would play nice with such hardware.

Oh, a Mac would work too. You'll have to find a copy of Quake 1 but it should work out of the box.

Sorry for the confusion - The reason my extra PCB had the dip settings on LCD not monitor - is I was trying to troubleshoot that PCB awhile back - think over a year ago. I was using an entire extra Gauntlet Legends set on a workbench. This included that PCB, wiring harness, Pwr Supply, control top. I have two sets, but one cabinet, monitor. I had an LCD monitor hooked up to that on a work bench. I had no luck with that PCB though. It always just showed .8. Never cycled thru any numbers. When I hooked it up with the new video card I forgot about that dip switch had been put on LCD. Although as stated earlier, it did finally cycle thru the LED numbers and I got a ping. But did not seem to boot up like it should. That is when I noticed the dip switch on LCD. So, after I set it back to "monitor" on the dip switch - I no longer get it to cycle thru the LED number. :-( It is now stuck on .8. It does not try to cycle at all. It seems stuck. I hope that helps clarify my problem(s).

So you have the boardset on all factory dip switch settings and factory default jumpers?

So for clarity's sake, describe the boardset that goes ping during the boot process.

Is it a dedicated GL boardset? A dedicated GDL boardset? A conversion GL boardset? A conversion GDL boardset? Are all the jumpers/dip switches in factory default settings? Are all the original ROMs/security chip in place on that boardset?

I'll go break out the manuals and read up on it once you describe what it is you've got.

Sorry I did not say that. Yes both pcbs are dedicated Gauntlet Legends. I have put the dip switches to factory defaults. I had previously changed them both to a Dark Legacy conversion kit when they were working. All roms in correct locations and positions. Jumpers have not been changed either. Thank you for the help.

I will try to look at the manual tomorrow to see if I can glean anything from it.

After tomorrow I will be out of pocket for a few days.

Here's a couple of thoughts.

On the boardset that pings when you start it, wait a minute or two and then drop a coin in it or hit the service credit button to do the same. Do you get any sounds?

If it were me, I'd try to rule out the monitor by hooking up another monitor to the game. If you don't have any other med res monitors, throw the switch to go to standard res and try that.

The easiest path would be to build a long enough video cable to reach into another cabinet right next to it so you don't have to do anything but move the cable to the new monitor.

The fact that you get the ping on that game means you've passed the hardware tests and the game is booting. It's bizarre that you're not getting video at that point.

Does the monitor kind of 'flash' for a second before you hear the ping sound?

Do you have any other monitors to test with?

Do you see the hard drive activity LED flashing at any point?

Have you double and triple checked the defaults for the jumpers and switches?

No, thats the problem with that PCB. It is now stuck on .8. I only got the ping and the boot up the first time I tried it. That was the time I had it on the dip setting for LCD :-(. After I turned it off. Made sure the dip settings were factory, and tried again - I no longer get it to do anything. That PCB is stuck on .8 That is the same problem I had with that PCB originally when I pulled it and tried to bench test it.

To help understand my crazyness:

First PCB I get the LCD sequence: 1,2,3,4, .8, E. u. (cycles over and over).

Second PCB I get LCD to show: .8 (it does nothing else just stuck on .8)

I now have a third PCB to take home and try that one with the new video board. I am crossing my fingers. Will let you know if third time is a charm!!!

Which dip setting did you have for LCD? I don't remember seeing that one.

Sounds like board #2 is messed up. But boardset #1 sounds like it just needs the new graphics card.

Also, check your voltages on a rom chip to make sure they are correct.

#3 PCB also is locked up showing .8 on the LED. This is with the new video board and new hard drive. Could the Dark Legacy roms be bad?

Can you explain how to check the voltages on the roms? And what voltages they should be.

Does anyone know what just .8 means? Two PCBs are stuck just showing .8 They do not cycle thru any other numbers, the Hard drives do not spin up.

Any help please. I am almost ready to make this thing a multicade, it is driving me crazy.

Are you sure you are changing the security PIC chip as well?

have you removed the battery from the motherboard? I had a similar problem where it would just boot, reboot, pulled the battery and was fine, (did replace the battery in the end) but was like it got stuck in a loop ????

could be like NVRAM corruption. I've seen this on PCs actually, so it's possible.

I have been changing 3 roms when converting between Legends & Dark Legacy (Video, Sound, Boot/Security).

I have not tried the battery yet. I will give that a shot too.

What is NVRAM corruption?

it's where the battery-backed up memory contents just get messed up.

it just happens sometimes. obviously it gets fixed when you pop the battery out, it'll clear the memory contents. then turn the machine on and off. wait awhile. drop the battery back in. should be all fixed. :)

hopefully it's something that stupid.

I had to replace the battery and several weeks later is when my trouble started. Just now I pulled the battery out and still have the error message "unable to get home blocks io error eof on file" The LED cycles though to 9 then A,B,C,D,E then a line goes back and forth like a cylon's eye. When I put the battery back in it cycled indefinitly trying to boot up with the added message that flashed for half a second "CPU=R5K-2.1, SCACHE=NONE, NILE IV Rev=2"
Do you get anything like this difference with or without the battery 72DEMON? Does anything at all come up on your screen?
