Hello!
Can anyone tell me what a Gauntlet 85' goes for? A local shop has one and is considering selling and wants me to make the offer. Overall, the game is in great shape cosmetically, no burns, controls work etc. I played the game for about 10 minutes with no problems.

Also, is there anything specific I should know or look for before I purchase?

Thanks Again--
Mike

Yes, you should know that you will very quickly grow tired of this game. Having this one at home just doesn't live up to the memories. Not having to put money in and unlimited continues ruins it.

It is still great 4 player fun.

That, like many other things, is a matter of opinion. I've got the original and working on a Gauntlet II and love both of them.

That being said, it's not something I'd play for hours a day. But we do have a marathon every few months where it's played for hours at a time. And it always seems to be popular for friends and their kids when I have a gaming night at the house.

Groovie_Ghoulie should try it in mame or one of the anthologies or collector's editions for one of the console's first. If he enjoys it there after playing it for a while then he might go for the full-sized game.

He can pass on it if he doesn't like it and search for something he find's more entertaining.

As for the original question, I paid $325 for the original Gauntlet that's in very nice shape and the Gauntlet II will end up being about the same price once I finish with it (basket case and a complete restore, but it had a lot of nice parts in it from a conversion that I sold and will offset most of the cost of the restoration).

I'd have to agree with that. If you havn't specifically been looking for a Gauntlet, and are just buying it to have a cab in your house, then there are better games out there. If you're like myself, and have always wanted one, have been specifically looking for one, and are a total Gauntlet nerd, as well as enjoy having it around for nostalgia purposes, then go for it.

Of course, if you have the willpower to impose limits on your own play i.e. see how far you can get on one life, x amount of credits, etc., then you can "keep it interesting" so to speak.

dude, you should just have one machine and get a dual modded board.

I used to have it on my Grail list as I absolutely love the game. The thing is that the gameplay doesn't it w/ everyone and you have to have a very organized group to appreciate the fun of it.

I tried it at CAX and ultimately it was ruined for me. This paradigm where owning it means not paying for life actually breaks the game. you just load in a few thousand in health and the point of waiting for the break in the ghost generation line makes no more sense. Just play the warrior and walk thorugh everything.

I have the most fond memories of this game. I really thought it was a grail game for me. I had a year long search for a good buy lined up. After CAX I was like meh... freeplay completely breaks the gameplay.

I'm not trying to ruin it for you also but I'm trying to throw that out there as something to seriously consider. The fools at CAX I was playing w/ were so stupid that they couldn't even figure out the maze. This I also ruined it for me. It's hard to get a good party of four going on this game in particular cause you have to run around organzied.

All of the info makes sense. I have 2 list of games I want. This is on the second list. $300.00 bucks isn't so bad. I like the game and always have.

The fact that it's a 4 player really does it for me.

Well I'll see what happens, I'm not going to pay over $350.00 for it.. I spend more then that on my "extra curricular activities" per month..

Maybe it's because I'm new to collecting, or lack of machines available in my area that makes me want it more.

I have quickly learned that people selling these games, believe they are sitting on a pot of gold when it comes to a fair price!!
