I know its not arcade game related but with the amount of knowledge I thought I would at least ask.

Gateway P4 Vista
She was told the power supply was bad. She asked me to fix it. I put the new supply in and the computer turns on and sounds like its booting but the monitor does not come out of sleep mode. Any ideas?

does it have any LEDs on the back of it? I know dell's do, but not sure about gateways. If it does, you can usually use them to diagnose what is going on.
If its a p4 be sure to check that the square 4 pin power plug is plugged in as well - i've forgotten to plug that up, and seen one do something similar.

Next, unplug everything from the motherboard except for the monitor and power - even the memory, and see if it will post. Chances are it'll at least give a memory error. If that does it, start plugging stuff up and turning it on until you find the bad component.
If that doesn't help - www.badcaps.net sells capacitor kits for the motherboards. I've had a dell p4 that acted similarly - it ended up being bad caps on the mobo.

Goggle the funtion key to boot into the BIOS page. If it dose not work you have a bad mother board or a bad boot sector on the hard drive to start. It could be the processor or one or more sticks of RAM. Sounds like a reload unless you have the exact same computer/ mother board to try the drive in.

The problem is the monitor doesnt come out of sleep mode so I cant configure anything on the screen. Ill have her bring it back to me to see if I missed the 4 pin to the MB. There was the line of wires that went to the MB and then a smaller set(i think 4 pin) that was also attached to those same wires that went into the same connectors as all the other wires. Is this what your talking about or is there other wires I need to plug in also?

I'm talking about the small 4 pin square connector that comes from the power supply, and plugs into the motherboard. I think you may've missed that one. On some power supplies, their is a 20 pin connector, that has a 4 pin connector that attatches to it to allow you to use the same power supply on both 20 and 24 pin connectors on the motherboard. Then, there is a second completely seperate 4 pin connector comes from the power supply and plugs to a seperate connector on the motherboard. It looks like this -

IIRC, it usually plugs into the motherboard near the processor - kinda in the middle of the mobo. Here's a pic of it i grabbed from google and circled it in red-

Are you sure the monitor's working OK? Tried it on another known working PC?

I had a VGA cord crap out on me once, right in the middle of setting up a PC. No lie. Monitor was working fine. Shut down the PC. Turned the PC back on, and nothing, just an amber light on the monitor's LED. Sleep mode. But the PC was booting.

Swapped a new VGA cord in and voila, the monitor came right up.

Test the monitor on another rig before you go any further...

I did. I brought the PC to my house and hooked it up to my monitor. It didnt work so I put the monitor back onto my PC and it came up just fine.

I am sure you have checked, but (if the unit has an add on video card) did you plug the monitor into the correct card?

Yea I'd check this too. I've seen people hook the video to the onboard graphics port when the machine has an addin card in it. The addin card disables the onboard.

That and make sure both power leads are hooked into the mb.

If you have the old ps you can test it. On the 20(might be 24) pin connector you can short the green cable to a black one to get it to turn on. You can check voltages on it then although to really test it you need to put a load on it.

Ok, she finally brought this back to me. There is NO beeping whatsoever when this computer gets turned on. It has a 4 pin plug on the motherboard that says PW2. I cut the 8 pin plug in half and plugged it in. I now get a beep and the monitor works.
Thank you so much for your help!!
