Change your ship in Parsec 1
While normally obtainable around Parsec 31 by getting the blaster head, you can get a different ship in the very first stage. This ship can have three bullets fired on-screen normally (the standard ship usually only has two on-screen).
To obtain this ship, wait until all the enemies arrange into their attacking formation, and don't fire any bullets. When they are set up, you may see a shooting star. Shoot only the second-to-left enemy on the bottom and a special flag will apear. DO NOT GET THE FLAG (it can be picked up AFTER you get the new ship, so don't worry).
When the queen comes down to attack, steer your ship into it (not the blaster head). Your ship will explode, but the ship icons below will change, confirming the secret worked. From then on until Game Over, you will pilot the new ship.

Now I tried this, I shoot the second to left (does that mean second from the left?) and nothing happens. Anyone able to do this?

I think it's in a different place on different ROMsets. I've seen it done in MAME, so I know it can be done. Incidentally, the new ship gives you a 3rd bullet shot. Although if you have enemy bugs captured, they don't get the 3rd shot. The ship looks like the one on the title screen. It does work on the parent ROM in MAME (rev D, although I have no idea how to tell different revisions by looking at boardsets, if that's even possible). It also worked on all the other Gaplus sets I have, and also Galaga 3 rev C. But when I tried it on my real cab, I couldn't get it to work either. Maybe I should pull my board out and dump the ROM's on it and see if there's any different.

(I was gonna post MAME screengrabs of it, but I didn't have the manage attachments button for some reason, so I reloaded the page, and I see you've already posted a video :) )

I have 2 working Gaplus boards, I think I might try the other one out too.

Old thread, I know, but I was recently at an arcade show, and someone had a Gaplus there (in a converted Mappy cabinet, minus the header...looked rather strange ;) ) Anyway, it had one of the earlier (I assume) ROMsets, that on the high score table, gave you 5 initials, age and blood type. The alternate ship trick worked on this one and it made a huge difference on the game. Normally I can only get to about parsec 21 with just over 300K, but with the alternate ship, I got up into the 60's, with over 1 million points.

That is the Namco board, I just sold mine to MrMolding. All I have now is the Midway version in my Gaplus cabinet.

Here is a video:

Yeah, I saw that...I hope you've worked on your challenging stage skills since then

Ouch! And yes. I need to turn the difficulty on my midway cab it came from the previous owner on the hardest setting

Heh, I was just bustin' on ya :) As long as I have at least one bug captured, I can usually max out the letters and extra rows above them. Funny it was set to the hardest setting...the previous owner must have been a masochist! :D

He didn't know anything about arcade machines, all he did was to remove the leg levelers. I assume it was set that way in the connecticut arcade. That or the person who repaired the monitor for him was a jackass.

Old thread but whatever.

Try as I may I can't get this trick to work. Both my son and I have tried everything we can think the get the RallyX flag to appear to no availe. Might be a ROM version issue?

It's possible that you are using an old ROM version, correct. If you are trying it on a 60 in 1 it definitely WON'T work. That's an older version of Galaga 3.

This same thing confused me as well. I would try it on the Galaga 3 60 in 1 and it wouldn't work. But it worked fine on my actual Gaplus PCB. At first I thought it was because it was Galaga 3 and not Gaplus and the Galaga 3 rom update killed the easter egg; but turns out I was able to replicate it in MAME with an older Gaplus version too.

Moral of the story. Older versions of Galaga 3 and Gaplus = no easter egg. Newer versions have it enabled.

When I have some time I can list exactly which have it and which don't. I'm just not in front of my MAME machine at the moment. But it's something I worked out by comparing versions earlier this year. :)

I have an all original cab...

Glad you supplied pics of the PCB! I was going to ask you to do so (out of curiosity). I will take a look at MAME first chance I get to try to figure out what version you have. Hopefully it's something that can be rectified with an easy rom swap.

Still haven't forgotten about this. Work has just been brutal lately. I've been literally working, crashing for a few hours at home and going right back to work.) So no chance to work on games unfortunately. But...

I'm off tomorrow so I plan to take some pics of my board and figure out the differences in ROM versions in MAME and post my findings here. Not sure if anyone's ever talked about the easter egg differences in versions but it would be nice for it to be archived here for the greater good. :)

Bonus: There's a high score save that JROK made that you can burn yourself. It requires de-soldering and socketing a RAM chip, but you may want to consider it if you're burning/swapping roms already. I plan to add this to mine.

I have a Midway Gaplus PCB with the Gaplus title screen, but it verifies in romident as "galaga3c" in Mame. I can't get the hypership cheat to work on my board. I tried swapping the roms around with the Namco set in Mame to test but wasn't able to coin up afterwards, altho the game did boot.

Interesting.. I wonder if the ROM's jrok uses will enable the trick? Although I'm not sure I want to modify the board if I want to do a Twin Galaxy run at the record....

@highscoreheroes have you tried this trick that @CrazyKongFan just told me about? This works on my boardset.... so extra life but no hypership...

"Dunno if I knew it back when I posted in that thread 10 years ago, but on the roms on the Midway boardset, you have to shoot the 2nd one from the left on the 2nd row from the bottom, rather than on the bottom row. This requires you to do it while they're forming. I can usually do it, but sometimes I miss or hit 2. The flag will come up, but if you crash into the blaster head, you won't get the alternate 3-shot ship like you do with the other romsets. I have gotten it on the Midway boards though, but don't know what triggered it."

Your board @KaBoom1701 doesnt allow you to enter blood type. I have a Namco pcb with German romset and I cannot enter blood type either. I thought that was the only rom version that didn't allow it.

my board allows for hyper ship. In the US version, the cheats were disabled.
