Gaming on my Motorola Droid X with a Wiimote via bluetooth

So in reference to The Wizard thread, I decided to share how I game on the go using my Verizon Motorola Droid X and a Wiimote.

I know you can practically do the same on a DS or PSP as far as running emulators, but I like that I have the convenience of playing on my phone and with actual Nintendo peripherals. Also, the emulators that yongzh develops are really clean and run very well with lots of features and settings.

Hardware:
Verizon Motorola Droid X
Wiimote
Wii Classic Controller

Wiimote App:
Wiimote Controller by C.C.P. Cre@ions

Emulators used:
nesoid by yongzh
snesoid by yongzh
TigerArcade (MAME) by Tiger King [actually only plays MVS and CPS1/2]

Yup, and all the other MVS and CPS2 games you can think of. It's awesome. :D

I should mention the Droid X also does HDMI out via a dock or cable. Here's a great video of a guy who hacked Wii controls into an SNES controller and plays it on his flat screen.

I have no idea why I never thought to look for a MAME app for my phone. I have all the console emus (which I never use because I think the controls suck).

Haha, I'm going to have to carry around a Wiimote with my phone from now on! :D

I wonder if I could adapt my USB SNES controller to work on my phone? :p Has anyone modded an SNES controller with blutooth? :D

EDIT: haha - that didn't take much searching...

EDIT EDIT: Off topic, but this one is freaking amazing.

ROFLMAO!!!!

Just what I needed... something new to hack.. Thanks for posting.. never thought to look for emulators on the droid.. :D

Well, that's the beauty of it. You don't need to "hack" your phone. It's as simple as downloading the apps from the droid market and having a Wiimote handy.

Glad I could make someone laugh today.Sucks that the iphone doesn't have an emu app..or something.Screw playing Angry Birds on my phone,I want to play some nes games on it.

I remember being able to get install an nes emulator on my iPod 3g when I used to have one. But it was jailbroken so I was able to install homebrew apps.

Even so, it was lacking and, although it could also connect a Wiimote, it had lag. I don't know if there's a better one out now, but I doubt it. From experience, no iphone/ipod emulators come close to these ones on the Droid X. But Apple products aren't known for emulation. Ex. MAME.

It's not all it's cracked up to be. Playing old console games with touchscreen controls is teh suck.

+1

Yeah, like I said, touchscreen controls will never work for console games if you ask me. Even with the DS, you usually use a combination of the D-pad and other buttons for most games. Until the day the technology gets to the point where we control games with our minds, the old controller (D-pad, analog(s), buttons, triggers, etc.) will always be the most practical way of playing games. Hence, using the Wiimote/Classic Controller with the Droid X. :D

Right, but I just don't see wiimote controls (or any other external controller) being practical in most cases where I'd be gaming on my phone - at least not for me. If I'm somewhere where I could be playing games on my phone with a wiimote, then I likely have other gaming systems I can play nearby.

It's neat that that is possible, I just don't think I'd ever actually utilize it.

Yeah, very true.

The only time I really use it is when I'm traveling or at a place with time to kill. Ex. On an airplane, staying at a hotel, hanging out at my in-laws, hanging out at the mall while my wife is shopping, waiting in a long awaited movie line, etc. Basically, anywhere where I don't have games and time to kill. But it's not like that's all I do with my extra time. Just when I feel the itch. :)

You play games on your phone with a wiimote in all those situations? Do you have the phone strapped to your head or something? :D

I used to play my Virtual Boy on plane rides growing up. I'm fairly certain I'd get fewer odd looks from people using a wiimote on a phone :p

No, every single one of those places has a coffee table, table, tray or floor. It's not that hard really. Ex. We just went to Hawaii. 10 hours round trip. I was able to kill some good amount of time with no real effort.

And like I said, it's not like that's all I do with my free time. It's just something that I can do since I have my phone with me all the time and a wiimote is small enough to carry around in the car or in my murse (if I know I'm going somewhere where I may play). I look at it as a bonus feature to my phone.

Dude, I can't see someone trying to play a Virtual Boy in public. You must have looked like a total loser. But that's awesome at the same time. :)
