OK, my daughter is wanting some new Wii and/or DS games and wants to trade her games in at Gamestop.

For those of you that do this, what do I need to know? Care to share any insights?

Thanks!

Usually, the older the game, the less you'll get in trade-in value. If it's a popular and/or recent game, it will usually hold a decent value. I wouldn't do cash out if you plan on buying more games as you get much less.

Ex. I just traded in SFIV 3DS at GameStop for $17 value. It retails for $34.99. So I got about half it's value. Though, I only paid $15 shipped because of an Amazon launch deal. So I actually made $2. :) GameStop will sell it used for $29.99 I'm guessing.

Here's a site that is updated by users with trade-in values if you want to get an estimate. If not, just take your games into the store and check at the register. Some games will get you $0.25 and others could get you up to $20+. It just depends on the game and for what console.

Trade in is very low. Unless the game is a newer game and they don't have any. But don't expect to trade in Halo 3 for $20. You would probably get like $5.

But you have to pay $15 for the privilege of trading? That seems pretty steep.

Why do you have to pay $15? You mean for their annual membership? That's just to get a Game Informer magazine subscription and additional trade-in % tacked on to your trade-ins. You can still trade-in without a membership. I don't shop at GameStop enough to warrant buying their membership.

OK, that makes more sense. I'm operating on 3rd hand information here and given the fairly meager returns I expect to see from trade-ins it wouldn't make any sense at all to pay $15 on top of that.

My daughter will likely not be wanting to trade in the most recent super popular games so my expectations are set pretty low.

Is there a more reasonable way/place to trade in games?

Not really. There are other retailers that will claim to offer the most trade-in value, but they all offer 50% or less for games. Sometimes GameStop will do specials where they will add 20% extra trade-in value for a certain number of games or a specific game. Just depends on what promotions are running that week.

Your best bet to get the most for your games would be to sell on CL or eBay for a bit less than what it goes for used at GameStop or other retailers.

Ex. I probably could have sold SFIV 3D for $20-25 on CL or eBay for someone looking that doesn't want to pay $29.99-34.99 + tax at GameStop or other retailers. Though, trading in at GameStop is quick, easy and convenient. So I went for a little less at $17 and I figured I still made out in the end.

Sell your games on local classifieds, you'll get more for them than those crooks will ever give you.

I only shop from their bargain bins for used games, everything on the shelf is way overpriced...like $5 less than a new copy for a 3 year old game? Give me a fucking break, hilarious.

You can also trade in games through Amazon: link

I do all my trade-in's through Amazon ever since they started offering the .99 cent release day shipping and most of the time if you are preordering a new game you can get a $10 or $20 credit for your next purchase. AMAZON IS WIN !!!!!

GameStop has always been the informed gamers' nemesis. Sheep trade in games there because they don't know any better. The only problem is that nowadays the individually owned game stores are closing and being replaced by the communist GameStop, EB Games, Software Etc., etc. I say sell your games locally or on craigslist. You'll get more. Also, shop around when buying new games. As stated earlier, some stores give gift cards with the purchase of a new release. Then save the gift card and use it combined with the money you get for that game when you sell it to put towards your next game.
