SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. —
A national video game retailer is looking to make a big splash with nostalgia-focused gamers.

GameStop announced the opening of new Retro GameStop stores on Tuesday, with a cryptic social media post showing off a host of video game console logos from decades past.

In a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, GameStop posted a logo for the new retro stores, alongside a banner showcasing video game consoles, including the Super Nintendo, Game Boy, Sega Genesis and many more.

"The Classics are Back," the post reads, before linking to a Retro GameStop store locator.

While a full list of locations is not available, a search on the store locator shows that the University Mall GameStop in South Burlington was listed, along with the GameStop in the Upper Valley Shopping Center in West Lebanon, New Hampshire.

An employee at the University Mall GameStop confirmed that the store has converted a section of the store into a retro gaming area and is already selling titles for several old-school systems. The employee confirmed that they are working on putting out stock for other systems, including Super Nintendo and the Nintendo 64.

It is still unclear how many of GameStop's locations will be converted to Retro GameStops at the time, as the company did not release a full list of stores. There are more than 2,900 brick-and-mortar locations in the United States as of August 2024.

That's local to me. Interesting.

Would be cool to see but those locations are a bit far from where I am in NH to be worthwhile. Hopefully they have additional locations. We do have some good used game stores here in southern NH already though.

Should be fun. Sort of brings back memories of the early 2000's when FuncoLand and even the mall EB Games/Software Etc had small stocks of retro games.

The big question is, how or where are they finding all these retro goods to stock these stores?
And secondly, how much inventory will they have to keep the shelves interesting?

If it's anything like back in the day: trade-ins where they will give you pennies on the dollar.

Already saw on Twitter a retro guy saying his GS was selling Pokémon GBA repros for $50. The worker knew they were repros but said they have to take them if they're in good condition or whatever.

Have fun with these guys lol

I burned a lot of fuel around those environs from 1986-2006 and man, if you want to see nothing local to you then you should schedule a trip to visit me now.
That is! Nothing is local to you! :ROFLMAO:
Sounds like those could be pretty cool, for old farts like me anyway.

This move makes sense. I mean, with the modern gaming going almost exclusively digital, what else will Gamestop be able to peddle in their stores? They're already stocking their locations with lots of non-gaming junk like toys, FunkoPops and anime crap.

If these retro stores are properly stocked and staffed by knowledgeable employees (not millenial youtubers who discovered retro recently) it might be a nice change in terms of the retail landscape.

Maybe they should break out the remaining stores as Gamestop Next-Gen to appeal to modern gamers and their love of Fortnite and whatever else kids play now.
