Mortal Kombat (entire series) - and the rest of the button mashing fighting games.

I think sf2 and mk2 were the best fighting games. I'm not much of a fighter person myself but I understand why those heavily appeal people that likes the genre. I believe the beginning of the end for fighting games was killer instinct with the off the wall nonsense ultra combo. Then mk added the dumb run button... Then marvel vs capcom happen... See the pattern here? lol

I agree with games like Tron, Mappy, Tapper, etc. is overrated. Though I will say the cabinets look really awesome! I can't speak for everyone but I think that is the majority of the reason why people wants to collect them. Also I think everyone wants them because rather or not you want to collect it, they make great games for trading for games you actually desire.

This topic also leads to the different types of collectors out there. That being collectors that seek games that made a difference in the industry, historic collectors that interested in how it all started, rare title collectors that has no friends (just kidding ;P), and collectors that just wants games that made a impact on themselves. In which ramps up prices for said games of course.

This hobby as a whole is a overpriced hobby... However you only have to get a game once. Plus there are multiple ways to approach this hobby so it all depends on what matters most to you.

It sure seems to me that the reason people think "X" game sucks is because THEY suck at playing it. If you took nearly EVERY GAME listed in this thread and spend an HOUR playing it, chances are you'd walk away from that game with a newfound appreciation for it.

The last few years, when I try a game and immediately think it "sucks"... I'll play it at least 10 times more before I write it off. Damn near every time I end up liking the game much more.

Amadar "sucked" for me the first time I played it. It's now one of my favorite "go to" games (as an example).

Many games are much much more entertaining when you learn "how to play them".

I've never been a huge Tapper fan, but lately I've been playing it more on the ArcadeSD and I am finding different strategies that help me last longer in the game and it's become a pretty damn fun game to play from time to time.

This won't work for EVERY game... yes, there are some games that just truly suck... but I try not to walk away from ANY game thinking it sucks with only a credit or two put in to it.

i agree that most people think a certain game sucks cuz they suck at it, but the real point here is that if a game is boring as hell or coded poorly, it should be on the list of crappy games that shouldn't be of interest.

...like Berzerk. THAT GAME IS BORING! sure its classic. and it has nice voices. but YAWN!

"suckiness" will always be in the eye of the beholder. With so many games out there, you do not have to like them all. There is only one household to please, so an agreement can be made to have something in it to please everybody. Everybody else does not matter.

This is VERY true. My personal example of this is Qbert and Joust.

When I was younger I distinctly remember trying these games for the first time without knowing anything about how thew work and immediately dying. I was like "wow...that game sucked"

Then years later, some people showed me how to ACTUALLY play those games and they are now on the top 5 of my most favorite games of all time.

Yah I have heard people rail on how donkey kong sucks and after a few minutes watching them I play I can see why they feel that way.

Some people just cant get the hang of that one for some reason.. same with Defender and a bunch of others.

The games were supposed to be hard and take your money so some are a bitch to play but still great games once you take the time.

Some games just plain suck (Im looking at you Journey) and 100 hours of time trying to get good would be like passing a flaming cactus out my ass.

what i dont get is why people suck at games.

games are easy as fuck. donkey kong? easy. defender? easy. crazy climber? easy. name 100-500 games... all easy. easy as shit. don't be a stupid human. games are fun and easy.

Arkanoid: ROD? Easy.

Eyes? Easy.

Marble Madness? Easy.

Any of the side scrolling fighters, TMNT, SIMPSONS, etc. I am so happy when I run across them as a collector/re-seller as they are so popular and I can not wait until they go away. It hurts when I sell a game like Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, Joust, Robotron, etc. even if I already have those titles.

  1. Paperboy - Never really understood the appeal of this one.
  2. 720 - pretty much the same as Paperboy
  3. Any fighter (MK series, SF series, etc.) - Never into the genre, so I don't get the interest.

that's why the other night I got the high score on YOUR MOM.

Out of what I've owned, I would say Space Invaders. After I sold it, I still felt like I needed something like it to round things out, so I searched for and found another 70's game called M-4. It's similar to Space Invaders, but you can play against a friend.

Playchoice-10 games. This was basically a standing advertisement for the NES: Hey, wouldn't you like to buy a NES and play these games without the timer ?

The lesser known Sega Mega-Tech arcade system was a similar system with Genesis/Mega Drive games.

I don't understand all the Space Invaders hate. The Space Invaders Multigame kit makes this a must have in my Game room.

"Little Mac" is only about as tall as the Mike Tyson sprite's inseam. Mike Tyson is 5' 10" in real life, which means he probably has a 30" inseam, or 32" at the most.

MR, I agree with your assessment. It's a *very* loose interpretation of '84 Punchout.

I prefer the SNES version over the NES just for this factor. Don't know if you gave that one a go before. It's actually more of a quasi Super Punch-Out. In which, I player Super more that the P.O '84 bitd.

Yeah, the SNES SPO is way better than MTPO. It isn't perfect: the opponents are still 100% patterned like in MTPO, and your gloves don't stay where you last put them (they default to down), but at least your gloves block punches automatically if they're in the right position (unlike MTPO where you have to pull down to block anything), and there's no foolishness like hearts, stars, multiple rounds, unskippable intermissions, or a midget for a playable character.

You'll find that the same people who prefer MTPO to the arcade versions also tend to prefer it to the SNES version as well. I'm willing to bet than 99.99% of them never played the arcade versions as a kid much, or at all, but played a lot of MTPO as a kid.

Between the two arcade versions, Super Punch-Out is definitely the better one. Having beaten all three of the console versions, and having scored well over a million points on both of the arcade versions (neither one of them can be beaten; they go on forever), I would rank them like this:

1. Super Punch-Out (arcade)
2. Punch-Out (arcade)
3. Super Punch-Out (SNES)
4. Punch-Out (Wii)
5. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out (NES)
