Games; when they dont want you to beat the high score.
Just this last weekend I was playing Game show and getting near the top high score. Not that it's impressive, but still something to shoot for. The friend holding the high score of 33.2 million was watching as I racked up the score on the 3rd ball. I had the multi-ball going, just looped to grab the extra ball and as both balls rolled down the left flipper, it died. At first I thought I missed the button or didn't press hard enough as the first ball drained. No such luck, slamming the button as the 2nd ball slipped by proved the flipper was dead.
I stood there a moment in shock. I tried the flipper button again: Still dead and one ball left to go. The displayed glowed, taunting me with my score a mere 200K away from the top high score. It teased me with its cheery game show music and flashing lights!!
So close! I frantically peeked through the coin door opening to see if maybe a wire jostled loose. Everything looks good on both the switch and coil. Still no life at the button.
Hoping it was as simple as a blown fuse, I took down the back glass, creaked open the access door and checked the fuses. They all looked good! Grrrr!
Wait a minute, the fuses for the flippers weren't slow blows. Aren't they supposed to be? With the game on, I careful pulled the left flipper fuse and tested it with a meter. It was blown! Such relief!! Quickly slipping in a proper fuse, I close things up and tested. Ahh, the wonderful sound of a working flipper filled the air. The score was mine!!
Putting the game back into place and taking a deep breath, I launched the ball. 9 Million points later, I blew the high score away! From 33M to 41M!
I guess the game really wanted me to earn the high score that time.
