Games That Suck That Could Have Been So Much Better

Name some games that didn't live up to their potential.

Cool premise, cool name, cool artwork, crappy gameplay.

What comes to mind?

Xevious doesn't count! Great gameplay! Just crappy music...

Kangaroo would have been way better with a Jump button.

Not that the game sucks, but I would like Mad Planets so much more if the control layout was reversed. I have to play it with my arms crossed.

I like Tron but it would be a great candidate for Donkey Kong remix treatment. The cone and spiders esp. need some new playfield designs.

Games I'd add to this list...most of the laserdisc games. Not fun IMO.

I wasn't a fan of the laserdisc games or the "superimposed graphics on movie-style backgrounds" games myself.

I thought Tron for the time was actually a pretty good game. Four distinctly different levels, pretty nice visuals, etc. A well-executed remix could be pretty sweet.

Though I was never a huge Zaxxon guy, I really hated Super Zaxxon. The decision to ramp up the player's ship up to Ludicrous Speed was a really crappy decision. And the cutesy dragon bosses were pretty lame too. One of the more uninspired sequels out there.

Empire Strikes Back, Escape From the Planet of the Robot Monsters, Vindicators... actually I could probably list more Atari games that needed tweaking than great ones. :/

Tron was my pick as soon as i read the title of this thread.

Laser games dont count for me because they had no chance of ever being better. Pure suckage.

Tron hasn't stood the test of time, but when I was 12 in 1982 I thought the game was "rad" or "totally awesome." The same way I thought the Atari 2600 was "rad" as well...

I don't get the hate for Tron - what do people expect for 25 cents? Cool cabinet, several different games in one, cool controls. I loved Tron back in the day. The fact that it is kind of easy was a bonus, I could play it for a while on 1 quarter, and I suck at most games.

Discs of Tron is a much better game than Tron, IMO. That game progresses nicely adding in gimmicks and things to contend with. It can only be played properly with that lift able spin-knob as well.

Major Havoc gets my vote. I have played it on a recreated cabinet, and still find the zero gravity bullshit maze stuff lousy to move around in.

Atari's Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters needs some control refinement. What a great game otherwise, but the joystick to isometric relationship on screen just doesn't work well for me for I die a lot.
